Fischli & Weiss

Peter Fischli and David Weiss are artist that collaborated for 33 years (form 1979 to 2012). They are both swiss, and are most known for their humorous sculptures, photography, instillations, and videos. Some of their work includes: 'the way things go' and 'Walls, corners, tubes'. There are includes balancing random objects on top of each other, which is mainly found in their sculptures. What I will be focusing on is their photography of flowers.

Their use of flowers and double exposure is very well done. There is sometimes more of a contrast between them. For instance they will use a image that focuses strongly on one object, a flower, and then double expose it will a wider image with a background as well as a flower. Double exposure is very interesting to me because when using two different images they tend to change the subject of the image and is often used to convey a subliminal message.  This style of photography also differs from what I usually do, which is more close up still images of flowers, which adds more of an element of excitement to what I will now be doing.

In conclusion I find that the work that they do is interesting since they work includes more of an abstract approach to photography and use humor more than people would normally use when being a photographer.

Annotations:

  • Too much negative space

  • Not very saturated

For these images what I have attempted to do is to create contrasting colors with different flowers. In my opinion I believe that what could have improved these images is to have more of a variety of in the flowers , and also to have different colors. However I still believe that these are fairly successful and although there are areas I need to improve with these will still be edited to look more cohesive and collectively more appealing.

Developments:

For these developments I have layered them on top of each other, with the challenge that one image should not completely overpower the other and look invisible. Another element that I have experimented with is color. I have slightly experimented with the use of color through out my prior works, and now with the use of color and contrast I wanted to alter slight changes to keep the realism of it. I wanted to focus on cooler tones, although having a brighter background would have helped to the contrast.  When layering I have wanted to mystify the screen to make it slightly unclear what is actually the original image. In conclusion I think that these developments are fairly successful and  the main areas that I could improve in is the use of background.

Further developments annotations:

Contact sheet 1.jpg
  • Blurry

  • Overly saturated with one color

  • Too much negative space

  • Very similar to previous photos

  • Not enough contrast between foreground and background

For this photoshoot what I was planning on doing was capturing a large array of flowers, to later double expose them on top of each other. Also by using different colors of light source it allows there to be more contrast between the highlight and the shadow. by using different angles, along with the birds eye view, I can create a more messy setting; which overall helps (as I am also trying to include my experience from different artists into these developments). Overall I have found that the photoshoot went quit well, will allowing me to create a large amount of photos with differing composition and lighting. I think that my use of lighting and composition was very successful overall.

Further developments:

When developing these images I wanted to create a glitchy effect. In order to do that I had to find out how I wanted t double expose the images, so that when making them they do not look to disorderly. Furthermore, I had to change the hue so that the images, overall, did not look too similar. What has inspired me to do these series of developments is that I think that if there were more flower in the original composition of the image, it would look more put together; and overall more appealing. My goal with this artist was to create double exposed images that work well together, and also to further develop the work that I have do prior as well.  In comparison I would say that these developments, as well as their images, are quite successful and overall I find that these images also work quite well in this style, even though the composition is not very similar to the artists.
