NICK FANCHER

ARTIST RESEARCH:

Nick Fancher is a photographer, author and educator. He specialises under dramatic lighting, habitually leveraging a bold colour palette and experimental cinematography approaches His work includes portraiture, commercial photography, and fine art. His many works are under many of these subjects. Fancher's art is versatile and diverse  He is also renowned for his efficient operating methodologies in unconventional locations. Nick Fancher graduated from Ohio state with a BFA in photography in 2005. His work is expertly framed with the compositions of colours, expressions and positions adding meaning and depth to his photographic approach. The success of his artist career is evident by the number of group of individuals alongside whom he has collaborated. Collaborations with a fashion photographer Gail Shamon, hair/ beauty shoot with Chyna Tené and bold colour and shapes shoot with Kristie Latham. Considering his photography becomes so comprehensive, he has included many topics in his illustrations, including such culture. The utilisation of culture emphasises the importance of his artwork and makes it more significant to look at.  The segment I'll be considering is titled Strata. There are a variety of  pieces under this segment. They are entitled as Strata VIII,  VII,  VI, V, IV, III, II and I. All these pieces are showcasing his experimentation with either plastic wrap or oil.

Looking at and examining his work, it is apparent that he implements a plethora of mixed media. Oil, honey, and plastic wrap are a few instances. Francher has been experimenting about with oil and honey. Nevertheless, he favours the texture of oil. He aspires to append to the subject without seeming too literal by implementing these mixed mediums. Strata includes a black and white series and a colour series.

Strata VIII

When you examine at this portion of his oeuvre, particularly these individual shots, you can see how the color schemes are often not overpowering and in your face. They are evocative hues, yet they might have been subdued as he is aiming to make the subject prominent but not overly literal. In addition, the usage of low-key lighting and high-key lighting impacts and empahsises it to enhance the look and have resonance. There is no perception of motion blur in his work as a whole or in these portraits, although they appear warped and not discernible due to the texture of the oil and the material he is optimising. The focal point for Strata VIII and even about this whole segment is employing portraiture. Not only that, but the model's sentiments may construct storylines that onlookers can interpret in their own way.

The visual elements that stand out are the colour, tone and texture. Utilising these three visual elements Francher's work has been aided and been made more peculiar, bizarre and distinctive. Turning his images black and white, allowed for the shadows and highlights to stand out and improve the visual elements of the photographs. Francher's portrait configurations are modest and follow the same pattern. The foreground in his portraiture are the oil textures, honey drip and the subjects face. The background is the colours the are used in the snapshots. Nick Fancher uses oil because it is easy to work with and it holds the texture of the application very well. The honey however, drips rather quickly but the great thing about honey in his photos is that it refracts light. He intensifies the contrasts in the pictures to make the silhouettes more conspicuous and the structure of the oil and honey come forward. I look at his candid shots, and they captivate me. This is attributed to the distortion of the pictures and the fact that it is quite surreal.

CONTACT SHEET 1.jpg
CONTACT SHEET 2.jpg
CONTACT SHEET 3.jpg
CONTACT SHEET 4.jpg

These contact sheets are a preview of my first photoshoot in the style of Nick Fancher. I used a plain white background to take my pictures. These photographs are taken with a plain white background because I was in need of high-key lighting. I also used this type of background in order for the Vaseline texture on the acetate  and the  face to show. The use of the Vaseline and the acetate ought to be the the central focus of the photographs. However, the facial expressions played by the model plays a pivotal role in the snapshots as well. When taking these portraits, the model would alter her emotions to keep it consistent but not repetitive. Incorporating may facial expressions manufactured each image quite pleasant to look at. Varying the moods were transmitted by the facial gestures. I shot these images with normal iPhone camera. In addition, I utilized the same camera angle for all the snapshots. The photographs I have circled are successful images such as good compositions, right brightness etc. However, the images that are not circled are examples of bad composition, blurry, too close etc. Furthermore, there are some snapshots that did turn to to be successful but they are not circled. This can lead to utilizing them in the editing process. In my third contact sheet you can see that many pictures are circled. This is showing how successful the snapshots have turned out. Looking at all the photos, they looked like paintings which can add more of a meaning behind. This is also because they are eye-catching and distinctive. They turned out to be successful because of the compositions and the facial expressions being portrayed. Overall, using the successful raw images I want to transform them into my own unique style but also make them into the style of David Oldham. Thus, I want them to be idiosyncratic.

DEVELOPMENTS :

I have created this gallery to showcase me editing in the style of Nick Fancher. I have edited 17 images in total.  I have chosen these specific images as they have caught me eye when capturing them and they turned out be successful. The editing process was interesting as I have learned to transform them into the style of  Nick Fancher.

The process logs above are showcasing how I edit these images. I first opened the image in photoshop. I then pressed on the colour look up icon and chose the filter named foggy night. By adding this filter I was able to add a cool tone to all my snapshots. This was a feature I have taken from his work and added it to my photographs. Not only that, but the cool tone aided to build up a eerie atmosphere across the developing photos. Afterwards, I employed the hue and saturation to impart my portraits a blue tint to make them feel quite ominous. I modified the curve to enhance the brightness because the overall result was too dark. You can see the varied body language and the texture of the Vaseline by doing so. Increasing the curve I was being very careful not to overexpose the snapshots and not take away from the focal point.

Developing these snapshots in the style of Nick Fancher aided me to discover new techniques in developing my photos and making them more striking. After looking at all my images closely when editing, I was able to pick out the technical aspects of the image and improve from the raw images I took. For example, utilizing the doge tool to make the blue shade of the model's shirt lighter generated a big impact. To edit and make it a lighter shade, I just pressed on the background layer and went of the harsh blue shade. Further, before editing the raw images I would crop unnecessary background to make the snapshots look clean and not messy and all over the place. I think i could improve my work by doing something completely different. This means using a different mix media. For example, in some of his pictures he uses honey or oil and have them drip on a clear glass. With the model standing behind the drips it will make her face look distorted. Distortion can link to my recent photographers I have studied. However, these developments did turn out to be successful and I was bale to produce many snapshots with the new skills that I  have learnt. Whilst compelling this photoshoot and developing these 17 images - which are ominous, strange and gloomy - it has taught me that I can utilize any mix media and thus make my illustrations clear and prominent.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS :

BLACK & WHITE

PROCESS LOG 1 BLACK AND WHITE.jpg

This gallery is showcasing my experimentation in black and white. Using my previous edited images I have further developed my photographs. By adding the black and white overlay, I wanted to achieve and leave an intriguing atmosphere to my photographs.

This is showcasing the process of editing these photos into black and white. I first opened the image in photoshop. I the added the black and white filter. When adding the black and white filter, it created the picture to be bright and over exposed. To fix that I decreased the curve to make the pictures a tiny bit darker. This played a pivotal role in my developing of my photos because it transformed my images into whole new images. This lead to making the images not look over edited but look professionally edited.  The black and white filter left a ghostly feature to all 18 pictures. These also illustrated thorough the models body language and facial expressions. For example, lacing the hands on the acetate or in a position around the head. In addition, in the second row and the third row you can see how the hands are positioned in specific positions. The hand on the acetate can indicate that the model is trapped and has nowhere to go. Also, the photographs with the hand on the face elucidates the sense of showing her beauty.  Overall, all of the ideas I mentioned into making these photos as a whole helped create an abnormal mood. The created juxtapositions between the white and the dark areas of the picture make sure that the model is visible through the acetate and the Vaseline. This is shown through the high-key lighting I used to take the pictures.

Whilst compelling this photoshoot I was able to produce many snapshots with my skills and with just one step. That one step made my work very impactful and developed my photographs into new art. All the snapshots caught my eye and are successful. This is because they are all simple and beautiful compositions but they also might have some storyline connected through each image. Furthermore, the faces are seen through the texture of the Vaseline but also this texture plays a main role against all the photographs. Overall, theses set of developments reached my expectations and turned out to be successful, captivating and appealing.

FURTHER DEVELOPEMNT :

DOUBLE EXPOSURE

This gallery is showcasing my further developments of double exposure. I am using this double exposure technique to further develop these images and make them successful. Whilst double exposing two different images together, I was able to reconstruct new images and make them come to life.

These are showing the process of image blending. To double expose two images together I copy and pasted one image onto another image. After that I used the variety of filters given to me by photoshop such as overlay, screen, liner dodge, soft light etc , to merge them together. Choosing the right filter is significant through the process because one wrong filter can take away any miniature detail from the photographs. Throughout out this process, the second image that had been copy and pasted was mirrored - turned upside down - this gave it more of a fun and interesting. In addition, I adjusted some photographs, such as the brightness. In the process log, you can see how I vary from numbers when increasing and decreasing the contrast, the brightness, the opacity or the curve. For the brightness I kept on changing the number to -45 and for the contrast, the spectrum I used was from 50 to 90. For the opacity the numbers I used was from 70 to 100. Finally, for the curve I increased instead of decreased.

Overall, these set of images reached my exceptions because I was prepared to implement my abilities to my work and grasp on how to apply them accurately. Just by enhancing the brightness or the opacity, it was possible to manufacture a series of eye-catching snapshots. The process of making this gallery improved my skills and thus made my snapshots more prominent.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENT:

COMPOSITIONS

I am exploring composition with in this gallery. I erected arrangements by combing photographs from my first developments from my second photoshoot. This was accomplished by increasing the canvas from the very first image that is opened in photoshop. The second image was the copied and pasted onto extended canvas. Afterwards, I proceeded and repeated this process, however this moment with a different image.  Subsequently, I obtained multiple images beside one another. I iterated this method a couple of times and resulted with nine compositions including one with different ideologies each.  This is exemplified via the employment of graphics in a certain order. Constructing a scenario with only three shots and positioning them in strategic locations does indeed have a major influence upon that viewer. Observing at the composition can inspire the viewers to contend with their very own thoughts or develop something captivating in their imagination based solely on what they see. With some of the compositions , there are only two images that are beside each other. This is because the two images being used interlink with each other only and not the rest of the developments. For example, the compositions with only two images you can see how I placed images with the model closing her eyes and one with the model opening her eyes. In addition, all the other compositions with the three images are with the model looking away in the first picture, one looking at the camera in the second and one again looking away in last image. This makes them connected and this can be turned into a storyline. Consequently, it integrates the candid shots and merges them together. Through my configurations, I have fulfilled every one of my objectives and managed to produce several storylines. I was able to shoot in the style of Nick Fancher but put my own unique style on it. Overall, I believe all three compositions are successful and distinctive.

This second photoshoot is solely more focused on the use of mix media, such as honey. I can generate many compositions and emotions but also using the honey to add a different effect to the photos. However, when using the honey I will be putting on a glass pain instead of my face. Also, when changing the photos to black and white can also add an eerie feel to the snapshots and the use of high-key and low-key lighting also interlinks with Nick Fancher and how he captures his photos.

These contact sheets are a preview of my second photoshoot in the style of Nick Fancher. I used a plain white background to take my pictures. These photographs were take with a white background because I was in need to corelate it with the use of high-key lighting. I also used this type of background in order for the honey drips to be evident, refract light and the face to be seen. Using this technique I was able to point out from his work made the photoshoot a success. Honey ought to be the main focus of the photoshoot as I am exploring with different mix-media and so does he. DEVELOPMENTS :

I have created this gallery to showcase me editing in the style of Nick Fancher. I have edited 12 images in total. I have chosen these specific images as they have caught me eye when capturing them and they turned out be successful. The editing process was interesting as I have learned to transform them into the style of  Nick Fancher.

The process logs above are showcasing how I edit these images. I first opened the image in photoshop. I then pressed on the colour look up icon and chose the filter named drop blues. By adding this filter I was able to add a very light cool tone on top and also have the yellow hue of the honey stand-out. This was a feature I have taken from his work and added it to my photographs. After adding this filter, I then increased the curve to have the white background brighter but also the highlights form the the honey to refract the light. To develop the image I also increased the brightness and decreased the contrast. For all the images I increased the brightness to 20 and decreased  the contrast to -5. The last final step was copying and pasting the final image after it has been flattened and utilized the filters such as, screen and lighter colour to image blend. Image blending them together, it was able to aid the faces to become distorted and strange. This is similar to Fancher's work After, employing all these these techniques on all my raw images I was able to edit them into new snapshots that is appealing to the eye.

Developing these snapshots in the style of Nick Fancher aided me to discover new techniques in developing my photos and making them more striking. After looking at all my images closely when editing, I was able to pick out the technical aspects of the image and improve from the raw images I took. For example, using the eraser tool to rub the unnecessary items in the background.  I think I could improve my work by using hand sanitizer instead of using honey. To also make those images distorted the model would stand in specific positions while taking the snapshots. Distortion can link to my recent photographers I have studied. However, these developments did turn out to be successful and I was bale to produce many snapshots with the new skills that I  have learnt. Whilst compelling this photoshoot and developing these 12 pictures - which are fun but also peculiar - it has taught me I can use different mix media.

This is showcasing the process of editing these photos into black and white. I first opened the image in photoshop. I the added the black and white filter. When adding the black and white filter. When adding the black and white filter the photographs looked to over exposed. To make sure it was not over exposed i decreased the curve but then increased the brightness.  This lead to making the images not look over edited but look professionally edited. They turned out to be ethereal but also have an abnormal feeling towards it. These are also illustrated thorough the models body language and facial expressions. For example, placing her fingers in front of her face or tilting her head in positions or closing her eyes. Overall, all of the ideas I mentioned into making these photos as a whole helped create an abnormal mood. The created juxtapositions between the white and the dark areas of the picture make sure that the model is visible through the honey drips and the glass pane. This is shown through the high-key lighting I used to take the pictures. Changing them into black and white also showcases low-key lighting. Overall, all these ideas and steps I used to to create these aided the photographs and made them into new ethereal images.

Whilst compelling this photoshoot I was able to produce many snapshots with my skills and with just one step. That one step made my work very impactful and developed my photographs into new art. All the snapshots caught my eye and are successful. I prefer the black and white developments because They look more bright and adding the contrast to the images to have the honey more prominent added a variety of details. Thus, these pictures reached my expectations and they were successful.

These contact sheets are showcasing my third photoshoot in the style of Nick Fancher. I used a plain white background to take my pictures. These photographs were take with a white background because I was in need to corelate it with the use of high-key lighting. I also used this type of background in order for the face to be seen against the glass pane and behind the sanitizer. The hand sanitizer ought to be the main focus of the photoshoot as I am experimenting with different mix media and  so does he. however, the use of facial expressions and the composition of the model and the camera also plays a pivotal role. Varying the moods were transmitted by the facial gestures. To generate these portraits to be more distorted the model will position her face against the glass tray and just pose for the camera.  I shot these images with normal camera using macro lens. In addition, I varied the camera with each shot i took. For example, pictures in portrait and some with landscape. . The photographs I have circled are successful images such as good compositions, right brightness etc. However, the images that are not circled are examples of bad composition, blurry, too close etc. Furthermore, there are some snapshots that did turn to to be successful but they are not circled. This can lead to utilizing them in the editing process. In the second and third contact sheet you an see how the lighting differed. This

is because i moved the spotlight facing me to add a bit more of an ethereal feel towards that snapshots. Changing the camera angles enabled the snapshots to capture miniature details if you look closely. They turned out to be successful because of the compositions and the facial expressions being portrayed. Using different media I was able to develop my snapshots.  Overall, using the successful raw images I want to transform them into my own unique style but also make them into the style of Nick Fancher. Thus, I want them to be idiosyncratic.

DEVELOPMENTS :

I have created this gallery to showcase me editing in the style of Nick Fancher. I have edited 13 images. I have chooses these specific images because they caught my eye when capturing them and they turned out to be successful. The editing was interesting because editing in two different ways for the two different photoshoots however they were similar in some aspects. Using my skills from the last two photoshoot will enable the developing process be easy.

The process logs are showcasing how I developed these images. I first opened the image in photoshop and then increased the curve. To add a warm atmosphere across all my photographs I used colour look-up and the filter named soft warming to receive this effect. After I increased the brightness to 20 and left the contrast at 0. To finish editing these photos and to make it a tiny of distortion i added the Gaussian blur at a 4.1. using the same steps for the all images, I successfully edited them. I left the contrast at 0 because increasing it would make it too edited and will darken areas that don't need darkening.  Looking closely at some of the images I rubbed out some unnecessary details I saw in the background. After, employing all these these techniques on all my raw images I was able to edit them into new snapshots that is appealing to the eye.

Developing these snapshots in the style of Nick Fancher aided me to discover new techniques in developing my photos and making them more striking. After looking at all my images closely when editing, I was able to pick out the technical aspects of the image and improve from the raw images I took. The images that caught my eyes the most is when the model is looking up at the light. Also, all the photographs have a meaning of showing your insecurities and express them even if you have a barrier stopping you. This links to my other two photographers I have studied as well.  However, these developments did turn out to be successful and I was bale to produce many snapshots with the new skills that I  have learnt. Whilst compelling this photoshoot and developing these 13 pictures - which are fun but also peculiar - it has taught me I can use different mix media.

FURTHER DEVELOPEMENTS:

BLACK AND WHITE

This gallery is showcasing my experimentation in black and white. These images are further developments of my first edited versions of my raw photographs. By adding the black and white, I wanted to leave an intriguing and eerie atmosphere to my photographs. To further develop my snapshots I just opened the edited pictures in photoshop. I copy and pasted the same image on to it . I then pressed the black and white icon. This automatically changed the photos into this filter. After adding the black and white filter I increased the curve to the input being 149 and the output being 147. This made the image more bright and not dark. Further developing on that step I increased the brightness to 6 and increased the contrast to 43. To finish editing this image I went on the first layer and double exposed the same image onto of each other using the filter pin light. Using pin light allowed a blurry effect to take pace upon the snapshot. Whilst compelling this photoshoot I was able to produce many snapshots with my skills and with just one step. That one step made my work very impactful and developed my photographs into new art. All the snapshots caught my eye and are successful. They almost look like they are part if a fantasy. Overall, they have reached my expectation and have been successful.

HIGHLIGHTING SUCCESS :

IMAGE 17.jpg
IMAGE 9.jpg

Every development I have done in the style of Nick Fancher has been successful.

The photograph on the right is successful because of the composition and the use of texture from the Vaseline against the acetate. The photograph on the left I also successful because of the ethereal feel it is giving and how it almost looks angelic.

Using different mix media allowed all photos and these two in particular more meaningful and striking.
