What Is Beauty ?

beauty

/ˈbjuːti/

noun

  1. 1.

a combination of qualities, such as shape, colour, or form, that pleases the aesthetic senses, especially the sight.

My concept for this topic on Identity is to explore what the meaning is of beauty.

In our society today the concept of beauty seems distorted and as though our vision of this topic is blurred.

I think beauty is something quite significant when talking about identity. Let's question; When you are walking through a busy street what draws to you the most ?

It could be your surrounding landscape; eye capturing buildings; a particular angle between two streets. However, when I think of what I initially look out for or look at, my answer would be; faces - eyes, noses, mouths, hair etc.. (Prominent features of each face). Our faces are someone's first impressions. Now in society today, this process of initial impressions can bring you a higher chance of a dream job or comes to worse a miss of opportunity due to your appearance. This toxic method of picking everything apart is something we see at a very early age.

Now I think beauty is something in photography that is largely thought about. We are constantly surrounded not only by social media but everything we see in our day to day lives. Commercials, billboards, ads around the city. We cannot escape it. We are constantly reminded of others beauty, ultimately cause you to pick yourself down and tramp on your confidence within the subject.

To experiment and further my understanding of the concept on beauty through the topic identity, I want to look at a second branch called hidden identity. Hidden identity is, how we hide ourselves from others. This method of hiding your true beauty  behind objects, angles and other features is what I am mostly drawn to. Therefore, my concept will be the question "what is beauty?". A question in which I can explore the hidden side to your own identity and true beauty.

The word hidden means:

adjective

  1. kept out of sight; concealed.

Down below I have created a sub mood-board where I have found photographs exploring this idea of hidden identity. I have found artists who hide parts of the face with objects, compositions and other facial features. I think this concept of hiding or being secretive is a prominent theme within photography as previous photographers have used other objects to hide certain parts of their identity, which viewers' find intriguing with what's behind the cover.

My Speech

This is my speech I wrote a few months ago talking about social media. But more importantly the effects social media has on our generation about beauty standards. I talk about the factors on beauty and mental health. About how consuming topics like these surround us. I thought I would add this speech as it shows a reality within my concept for this project. Although this speech is not souly written about the effects of social media on our visions of beauty, I do think it relates to my concept.
