I have decided to make frames one of my final piece ideas as my first artist, Idris Khan uses frames to display his work in galleries and exhibitions. Frames are a simplistic and effective way to display one's work as they allow the viewer to appreciate the image within the frame, instead of the frame itself. I really liked how effective the frames Idris Khan used were, as they didn't attract my focus and attention, but instead shifted it further towards the images. Idris Khan's work does not require a creative form of presentation as the work itself is complex and inventive.

I believe that Idris Khan's choice of frames and image sizes to the right make his images more creative and effective. The extremely small size of the images requires the viewer to really look into the images and focus on them in order to understand them. The tiny size of the images also interests viewers from long distances, as they cannot see the images from far away so they are immediately drawn to the images and are more likely to move closer to get a better glance at the images and to fully comprehend what they can see within them. It also piques the viewer's curiosity, as seeing such small images in such big frames makes them wonder why they are that particular size. I believe that the contrast between the massive mounts and tiny images also draws the attention of viewers as the negative space around the images further compliments the images themselves, as when the viewer is leaning in to see the small images clearly, they are unable to see any other work and their attention is only on the image itself due to the big mounts around the images. I believe that Idris Khan's decision to place 5 frames together was well-thought, as it continues to give the viewers a lot to look at, but also causes them to have to focus on each image individually when viewing, before moving on to the next. The small size of the images also causes viewers to have to use their imagination, as they have to try and figure out what they can see in the small images by themselves, and each viewer may see different things within the images, giving Idris Khan's work a more personal feeling to the viewer, as their perspectives all depend on their individual minds and thoughts, instead of everyone having the same perspective of the images, making the work less interesting. I also believe that this idea of individuality conveyed through Idris Khan's choice of presentation for his work is well-thought, as it also links to the images themselves, as within Idris Khan's work, the viewer is required to reminisce on past memories of famous landmarks in order to give the image a meaning or concept. In addition to this. I believe that Idris Khan's choice of frame thickness also compliments the images as it does not draw the viewer's attention away from them. I also think that Idris Khan's choice of black frames is accurate, as it links to his work (as he uses black and white imagery within his work) but also does not draw attention away from the images as black is a simple and dull colour, whereas if he would have placed his images in red frames, the viewers would pay less attention to the actual images and more attention to the frames around them. In the centre, Idris Khan has placed one of his coloured images in a giant black frame. The fact that there is only one singular image in that area draws more attention to the one image as there are no other works to draw the viewers attention away from the work. The fact that the frame is extremely large also compliments the image as you can see it from a distance and when the viewers come closer they can see every single detail within the image, making it more interesting to look at.

Presenting work in smaller frames can be effective as it requires the viewers to walk toward the images in order to get a closer look.

Choosing white frames to present work in can be a good decision as it compliments the images within the simple frames instead of drawing attention away from the images.

Placing one big image alone on one wall can be effective as there are no other images on the wall to distract them or draw their attention away from the images in the frames.

If the artist uses black and white imagery, colours such as grey, white or black can link to their work without drawing attention away from the images within the frames.

Placing a smaller frame in between two big frames draws the attention of viewers as they wonder how the image is superior and why it is different to the others. It also creates more variation when it comes to presenting the work which could make an exhibition more interesting and draw more attention.

If I were to select frames as my final piece I would use the colour palette above. The vibrant colours such as orange and purple would be from my Hilly Van Eerten developments whereas the black and greys would be the colours I would potentially select for my frames. I decided to use blacks and greys for the frames despite my colourful developments because using colourful frames would draw the viewer's attention away from the actual images instead of complimenting them even more. A simple black or white frame would display the images in an interesting way without drawing too much attention which is my intention for my developments. I want the viewer to appreciate my developments and the detail within them rather than the frames and their colours.

For these images, I used 30x40cm white RIBBA frames. I placed three to create variation within my work and chose the colour white for the frames to draw all the attention to the image. I used a thin mount and placed my images close together to create an urban and city-like atmosphere for the viewer as they look at all three of the images together.

Here I used black RIBBA 30x40cm frames. I used black frames specifically to compliment the small amounts of black within my images so that they match, whilst also not drawing too much attention to the frames. I used frames with mounts to create negative space around my image and to help viewers identify the focal point of each piece.

For this series, I used black LOMVIKEN frames. I selected these images together as they are all cold colours. I used a black mounted frame to complement developments and used black frames so that the colours of the frames do not draw attention away from the images.

I used black FISKBO 50x70cm frames. I used 4 frames for this series to give the viewers a variety of things to look at and placed the images in large frames to create a city-like atmosphere when looked at. I did not use mounts for these images as I wanted the size of the frames to compliment to detail within them.

Here I used a black RIBBA 61x91cm frame. I used the colour black to match the style of the image whilst also complimenting the many colours within the image. This image will be big as it contains several colours and details I want viewers to see. I also used a mount to make the focal point of the image very clear to the viewers and to further compliment the contrast between the dull black and white colours and the vibrant colours (such as red, orange, yellow e.t.c).

For this series, I used a series of small white frames without mounts to compliment the images. I used white frames (without mounts) to make the focal points clear and used small frames so that the viewer has several things to look at right in front of them. I really like the contrast between the white and the vibrant images as I believe it shifts all the viewer's attention toward the work. I also used several images to create an urban feeling within the viewer. I did not require mounts for these pieces as the focal point of the pieces is already clear due to the vibrant colours within the images. I also used a variety of different coloured developments to create variation within my work and make it more interesting for the viewer. I used this specific composition for the frames as it does not require the viewer to turn their head when they are standing in front of the frames so that their undivided attention is on the frames. This also helps accentuate the urban feeling of the images.

For this series of frames, I used the SANNAHED frames to create a series out of my developments. The use of a white frame is effective as it does not draw attention away from the work itself but instead is more alluring as it portrays a colourful image within blank frames. This contrast interests the viewer and makes the images more effective and makes them clear focal points of the work.
