Laurence Demaison

Laurence Demaison is a French photographer and visual artist who has a vast amount of her art based around distortion and the most captivating is how she incorporates water within her work. Laurence's images are taken under water which plays with the perspective of the image. Laurence's work is all in black and white which the creates a bewitching strange atmosphere. Laurence started off her photography with just capturing images of herself and developing them in her own ways of art and now she captures images of dolls and mannequins. This in my opinion adds a haunted perspective behind the image.
Laurence captures images that represent the idea of hidden identity. For instance she takes images under water which blurs the identity of the model causing it to be difficult to identify them therefore developing the idea of hidden identity.
Laurence's work varies from being captivating, sad, terrifying and some are just down right peculiar. However in my opinion Laurence's work is strangely drawing me to learn more and figure out what her art truly is all about through capturing similar images and developing them myself.

Contact Sheet

LAURENCE DEMASIANO CONTACT SHEET.jpg

In my contact sheet I have captured images of my model beneath water. I had her submerged under water and I captured close up angles of her. I also incorporated flowers in my photoshoot to have add an extra wow factor. I then captured close up portrait angles to capture the movement of the bubbles when I instructed her to blow bubbles under the water to have that more distorted effect which is followed throughout Laurence Demasiano's work. I also asked her to make certain faces under water to have a more dystopian effect in the images. the main challenge was having my model move within the bath this is because it is a small area so if I wanted to truly capture the movement I wouldn't be able to as the area was quite small.

Developments in the style of Laurence Demasiano

In my edits I have turned them black and white and then I increased the contrast so we could see the bubbles more clearly. I have also decreased the curve to create a more dark atmosphere and keep the tone throughout my work dark and dystopian almost mysterious. The main challenge was trying to get my photos very dark so next time while editing I will ensure to decrease the brightness more to have a more subtle darkness rather than a greyish color.

highlighting success

further development 1.jpg

I have highlighted this as my success due to the fact it is simply in my opinion one of my best developments I have produced throughout exploring the photography of Laurence Demasiano. I really enjoy the way it is not black and white nor vibrant but a tint of a navy color. I also am very fond of how the experimenting with ink patches adds to the effect of making the photo resemble that it has been captured by an antique film camera with the help of the noise filter adding a grainy effect. This editing adds a sense of mystery as we cant see the models face so her identity is hidden; she is under water and almost looks as if she is dead because the water is not moving vigorously and no bubbles seem to appear. The model seems calm and focused almost like she is at ease. This then adds a bewitching atmosphere leaving the viewers filled with suspense.

Redraft Contact Sheet

ContactSheet-001.jpg

In my photoshoot I have captured images in the style of Laurence Demasiano by having my model lay on top of a black sheet of parchment paper and having someone hold a dish filled with water over her face. I captured images with an almost distorted effect as when they moved the water slowly it ran over her face and added an distorted effect through the features of my model's face. I ensured myself to capture close up angels so I could capture the movement of the water upon my models face that way it is similar to Laurence's work with a small twist. I also wanted to make the photos my own so in order to do this I incorporated flowers in the water and for the model to hold to create a suspenseful atmosphere and I also decided to try and experiment with ink which was actually surprisingly very difficult and sadly unsuccessful as we couldn't see the models face.

Redraft Developments in the style of Laurence Demasiano

In my developments I have edited them to be black and white and doing increasing the contrast in order to get a dark rather than grey atmosphere. I also drew with the brightening tool so the movement of the water could be more visible. I also decided to use the color look up filter to have a more highlighted effect and then I would decrease the opacity so it would look more natural rather than heavily saturated.
