FANTASTIC & STRANGE

Janne Parviainen
Analyses
For this artist I found that Parviainen explores colour and exposure in a similar way to Gjon Mili. He uses long exposure in his images and explores with large spaces where he has multiple shapes and people, which are then long-exposed so that It creates a picture of the room in colourful lights. Why I chose him was because other artsists who had closer style's to Gjon mili's original work were all in B&W. For my independent project and Gjon Mili photoshoots I had taken images with colour and edited them with colour, therefore I wanted to find a artist who used long-exposure similarly but with the use of colour.
In his photo's he captures large rooms where it is only shown by light. Therefore he captures all his images in a very dark room unlike some of Gjon Mili's work where it is not always a fully dark room he is in as you can still see light and shadow from other sources in his images. In his images every object in the room is lit up to create the same image as just taking an picture of the room however now everything is lit up by the lights. To do this he uses a digital camera (unlike Gjon Mili) and he has a very long capture time where his lense is open. However to capture his images it is impossible for him to move around to every place in the room, so he captures multiple spaces, where he uses long exposure for each image and then double exposes those images together to then create his final piece in his images. He captures his images with colour and explores with using more than one colour in many of his images.

Janne Parviainen

SIMILAR: He uses long exposure to draw out shapes and show different drawings in his photography. He uses models and has a style to how his lines of light appear and how the drawings look. He uses colour in some images and takes images inside so that there is not light from other sources in the image.
Difference: He takes images in black and white and uses a film camera to capture his images. He does not fill the whole image with light, as he wants to show quick drawings made by the model he uses (usually a artist). His camera has the lense open for under a minute whereas Parviainen has his lense open for a much longer time. Mili's lines do not plit and there is usually only one to two lines of light in his images. Gjon Mii captures motion while Parviainen captures still subjects and adds light just to show the object. Gjon Mili wants to ignore objects around the subject while Parviainen includes the background.
Highlighting success

I found these images were the most similar to the images that I wanted to achieve for my Janne Parviainen photoshoot. I took these images as further developments for my Gjon Mili redraft and I found these images were very successful as Gjon Mili developments and overall developments. the background is fully black in these images and that is one aspect I will also try to achieve in these images so that the foreground and light is clear. The aspects I found successful I these images was the vibrance and the colour. it was not over-saturated but still contained vibrant and corresponding colours I found successful. additionally the mirroring and subtle blur in the middle image is similar to the many small aspects of Janne Parvianen's work where there are many small aspects all making one large image, which appears very well.
CONTACT SHEET

I took these images of my room with fairy lights using the Canon EOS M100. For these images I tried to capture them in a dark room by closing all my blinds and capturing them at 9:00 so that it would be as dark as possible. I started off with a to large space for the fairy lights and did not switch between switching the lights on and off, therefore you could see the line of light from the camera. I then focused on small areas and folded the fairy light's into one compact line so that I could control where the light is drawing and appears. Additionally, I turned off the light at the start of its count-down. I found that a too low ISO made the image unable to focus (therefore not starting the capturing of the image), and the too bright ISO made the room to clear such as in multiple images appearing on my contact sheet. When capturing the images (for most of them) I captured the images with a 'lense open time' of 30 seconds (the max for my camera). I found at the end of the photoshoot there were some parts of the aspect for my camera I had not captured, however I wanted to edit the images first to see a overall image of what I had captured and what I needed to capture.
DEVELOPMENTS

I edited these images by layering the multiple different images of light drawings over each other. I realised that these images were successful however I needed a background so I will capture new images I can layer over these for a final product that will appear in his style. For the colouring of the images I experimented with multiple different colours and for a final idea I could experiment with multiple colours in one image.
WITH ADDED LAMP

-
I chose to add the lamp and experiments with changing the colour of different objects. Although this isn't the final outcome I found that the lamp could be an addition I make for the final image outcome.
