Jasper James
artist analysis
In this photograph I see a double exposed edit to where you can not see the person as keeping the persons disguise hidden from the persons viewing the photo. I see an outline of a man wearing a hat where inside the person is all colourful whilst the background is blurry giving a deep meaning to the background. When I see this photo, three words that pop up straight away would be mysterious, hidden identity and artistical. more sophisticated words would me peculiar, masked and creative. I feel like the picture has been detailed to such a precision that the building and streets almost seem like they are all leading into the persons body giving a sense on entitlement, I would describe the shapes in pictures as 3D rectangle because when you zoom into the picture you come to conclusion that it is only buildings taken from birds eye of view, the colours in the photo is multi-coloured with a white background which is a change as my unit 1 photography page I did mainly a black background with all the edits as black and white. This photograph shows a different style of double exposing using birds eye of views photographs to complete the edit, the key concept in his photograph is that he does a different style of double exposing where you can see the background being involved in with the persons body. If I were to describe this photograph to a person who could not see it I would talk about this picture in a way has a colourful double exposing where you can not see the persons face only the silhouette that has a meaning behind it where it is showing you its where you are in control with your life and the better you treat yourself and life the better the image is going to be. I would describe the indistinguishable person in the photo as secretive person who is insecure to speak about his problems and keeps it all bottled up and the more he bottles up the darker the image gets until its just a black silhouette. The place depicted in this photograph seems like a soothing calming photograph as the image seems like it would be a place where you would go by yourself to go relax.
The photograph reminds me of the opposite of Tatiana Parcero as Jasper James uses a white background, blacked out silhouette and has a different choice of imagery (skyscrapers)has a different way of double exposing whilst Tatiana Parcero uses black background, low key photos where you can see the person features with images (astrological) being double exposed in a different way. Even though they are both the complete opposite it is still obvious they do the same style of work with different aspects. Things I recognize in this photograph would be that all the images are done in a similar way (multicoloured) keeping his work repetitive and original which is one of the most important key concepts on Jasper James. Both of these two artist in a way do the same style of work , double exposing, and because of Tatiana Parcero I learnt in greater concept on how to double expose, giving me my personal experience to do this artist a success.
The objects that seem further away to me would be naturally the background because if you look into closer detail, you come to realise that the person is standing away from the wall, instead of being pressed against the wall, making us understand that the closer you are to the camera the more depth and intensity you will be double exposed. Jasper James is known for his double exposing to be multicoloured but rarely some are black and white. The colour used most in this photograph would be blue, because he added a little bit of saturation to the image; making colours like white look like a very faint hue of blue. What makes this photograph seem crowded is that all the buildings are all cramped up, making us feel a sensation of claustrophobic and unescapable city. The undistinguishable person in this photograph indicates him as a serious and very wise man with his strict hat. Just from this picture I can already point out that this person has lived a very interesting and peculiar life, I arrive to this idea mainly to the persons posture being upright and the lavish hat. The most important part of this picture would be the silhouette of this peculiar and unknown man telling us he might be hiding his identity for a serious purpose.
If I were to give this particular type of image a title, I would name this outcome 'the unknown abyss'. I decided to call the image the unknown abyss because no matter how much you think you know someone, there is always a window in one of the buildings in the persons body that you do not fully know about, and for every building is a different type of personality you do not know about, telling us that the buildings on the outside that are faint have been fully expressed but every building in the persons body is being kept behind from the world potentially causing depression and anxiety.

Contact sheets (RAW Images)

for my photoshoot contact sheet, I decided to wake up at 8:20 am when there was sun, I also has to hurry and not take my time as I had to go to a football match at 12:45. I started off at Tate Modern as I wanted to go to the highest level to take picture outside, but sadly I could not as there was recently a crime scene causing all the levels to be locked off. I then went to guys hospital and went to floor 36 the highest floor. it was locked off but I spoke to the security guard saying I had to take the shoot for my GCSE homework that was due the next day after convincing he let me go through to where I took pictures of these beautiful skyscrapers which is one of my best highlights of the shoot. I also wanted to go to the restaurant at the shard but they were fully booked for the whole week so I could not go. I feel like my photoshoot turned out successful even with the very little time that I had. what I feel like that turned most successful was how the pictures were all reflected on jasper James photography work which was the whole main idea. one of my strongest points in my first photoshoot was how I did the pictures from such and angle that you could see more of the beautiful sides than the uglier. and for my portraits I decided to do it after school with the sunlight as my main lighting, I wanted it to be basic and do it of me so for my next one I could have changed up the whole identity just like Jasper James.
Developments in the style of Jasper James - Exploring double exposure

For my first ever developments in the style of Jasper James, the outcome was a success. For the start I decided to do black and white developments where the background was completely white and all you could see would be my eye features or my main face features (lips, nose and eyes), depicting a new different style I tried out, including double exposing the image to the portraits using the quick select tool which was a new way of double exposing that turned out to be a great success. What of one of my best concepts on these developments would be that all the main buildings (skyscrapers) were double exposed onto the main core of my portraits showing dominance. One thing to change for my next developments would be that there is too much opacity making the developments too dense, and to lower the opacity a little bit just to show more of my face features
Developments in the style of Jasper James - Exploring colour

for my multicoloured developments in the style of Jasper James, the final outcome was a success but not as much of a success as the black and white ones. Once finishing my developments I realised that the edits that were fully multicoloured turned out to be better than the edits with the black and white portrait double exposed with the the multicoloured image, because when all of the edit was multicoloured it blended in more which is one of the key concepts to these edits. On my next photoshoot with the multicoloured edits, I came to conclusion, that I will be doing them all as multicoloured, rather than making the portrait black and white, with the landscape photographs coloured. A key aspect for my success would be the blending in with the eye, nose, mouth features were really smoothly done not making the landscape photograph look patchy, and also keeping the background completely white.
Further Developments in the style of Jasper James - Exploring mirroring techniques

For my further developments I decided to do a gallery with all the best outcomes mirrored right next to each other and once I finished I decided to add the picture to a strip as I think turned out better than just adding it as an image, depicting that I am exploring my work into greater composition. For my other further developments I decided to do a range of overlaying and mirroring the same outcome on top of each other giving a new concept to my work as being something more confusing to look at, almost as if I am trying to hide or make my identity more difficult to notice. I did not change anything to it all but the way the images were overlaid together it seems as if there was a change of texture to it.
Redraft RAW Images (Photoshoot 2)

For my re-draft contact sheet I took portrait pictures of the model and I decided to do different range of poses where for some she would look up into the abyss and for others she would look into the camera, to switch it up I also did eye pictures of here to see what the outcome would be. I did these pictures after school in a studio room with a box light shining on her giving no shadow to get in the way but also to create more a contrasted face. The photographs were captured using a white background as it is what Jasper James does. I decided to involve a girl in for my nest photoshoot as my whole unit 2 is looking at identity so I picked the model as me and her have different face features showing I am experimenting with different types of identities like changing from boy to girl, short brown straight hair to long black curly hair, brown eyes to black eyes, different noses and lips. I decided to use pictures that I took in 2018 When I went to a skyscraper in NYC right next to the twin towers, and because Jasper James does pictures from skyscrapers, these pictures were taken on a skyscraper at night which Jasper James mainly did his skyscraper Photographs during the day, which is a difference but also a change, because my first photoshoot I did photos of skyscrapers from ground level whilst these photographs was taken on a skyscraper looking down on the street level.
process log

step 1 : pick out one of the red circled images, on the contact sheet, and open them up on Abode Photoshop.
step 2 : press the black and white logo on the far right of the page to change the image to black and white, lower or increase the colour contrast to change the colour skin.

step 3 : press the brightness and contrast logo on the far right of the screen, and increase brightness to where the white background goes completely white and then increase the contrast to change the density of the persons face features.
step 4 : press the curve tool on the far right of the screen and change it to what feels is the best outcome for you and after the curve tool you are just about finished unless you have to change something to make the image more of a success.

step 5 : once finished with your portrait editing, open up any image, that has been circled on the contact sheet, on Abode Photoshop
step 6 : next, you press the black and white logo on the far right of the screen and change the colour contrast by increasing it to bring the light more flashy making the image more interesting and vibrant.

step 7 : next, you press the quick select tool and and copy and paste the skyscraper photograph onto the portrait image, do not stretch out the image too much or the image will become pixilated bringing your mark down.
step 8 : next, press the eye tool right next to where the image is to hide the image, after you quick select the persons silhouette, next you make the image visible again then copy and paste the image. finally, you erase not too much but just to where you can see the persons face features.

Developments exploring double exposure and black and white imagery

for my re-draft developments in the style of Jasper James, I did a mixture of 9 black and white developments and six multicoloured developments because I wanted to show that even though my first multicoloured edits were not much of a success I took what was a positive and made it into a even better success. I did my edits through a simple but a long process double exposure, using Abode Photoshop 2016 version the techniques I used was changing main brightness and contrast to give the texture of the work a smooth-like layer. My main aspects that I like about the multicoloured edits would be how I managed to blend in both of the two images together but at the same time not reveal much of the persons full identity, giving a secret meaning behind it. My other main aspects about the black and white developments is that I changed the different style of poses how I included some eye developments which was a new thing I never did before. For all of my developments / outcomes what I feel that could be improved is the portraits are not really central making the work look uneven.
Experimenting with mirroring and composition

For my further re-draft developments in the style of Jasper James, I picked out some of my best edits and for some I overlaid them but for the others I did what Jasper James usually does, where he keeps the city and everything inside the persons silhouette completely contrasted, whilst the background was with a faint yet grainy same image as the persons silhouette was double exposed with, whilst for the rest I mirrored them next to each other, saved that as 1 development, then overlaid both of them on top after as a second development. What aspects I really like about my work, is that I did not keep doing the same style of mirroring or overlaying the two images together, like my first further developments/ outcomes, I decided to keep on switching everything up showing a an expansion of creativity as I do this artist. What I could improve for my next artist is the way I mirror, overlay etc, the two images together and how using my creativity I can do different types of double exposing.
highlighting success

for the end of my whole artist page of Jasper James I picked out three of the best edits of my 1st developments, 1st further developments, 2nd re-draft developments, 2nd re-draft further developments . The reasons why they are my favourites because they were the most successful edits out of the other ones, the reason why is because, the contrasting and brightness were just perfect and the background was completely white with no shadow inside.
