Christoffer Relander

artist analysis

When I look at this picture I notice it is a double exposed edit. I see layers of roughly combed hair around the outside of the image, that seems to be animal fur. The inside of the image is filled with natural substances like grass, plants and rock. From the looks of it we can see it could be more of a female than a male, because it has more facial features that would suit a female instead of a male, indicating a different change in identity. I see how it is relatable to Jasper James, as they both double expose there edits. Despite them having different themes, it zooms in from buildings and skyscraper pictures, of the city landscapes, to a close up different textures of leaves or trees, showing I am experimenting in different concepts of double exposing expanding my range of knowledge and poses to do. I see the concept of human form in collision with universal nature, other sophisticated words that are synonyms of double exposure would be dual revelation. The colours are black and white only but have a ranging gradient. The shapes range from circular to two- sided. the natural form in the image can not be designated to one shape or size. for instance the leaf is 12 sided. the lines look as if they are continuous however they are not, it is just because the image is very busy. After looking for a longer period of time I notice what seems to be the shape of a nose, through the contrast and shadow of the nostrils being reflected in between the gap of the persons nose and lips. If I were to describe this final outcome of a development to a person that could not see, I would speak about how the portrait picture was taken as a passport photo, with the body posture being strictly straight and the eyes, which have been covered, seem to be facing right towards the camera, with how upright and elegant the posture is; and how tensed the face seems to be.

hat does this photograph remind you of? This photograph reminds me more to Tatiana Parcero as they both do the double exposing in Black and white, because of Christoffer Relander work and the period of time he did his work it is more old and antique as you see the edit look a little bit yellow, portraying his work as a more olden day type of work whilst Tatiana Parcero work is more in the modern day lifestyle. Things that I mainly notice, is the leaves, I did not even see the persons face until I look closer into the picture, because the double exposure has kept the persons identity hidden; making us more curious to know whos behind the picture. Things that would seem new to me would definitely be, that you can see some face feature e.g. hair, nose shadow and pouty ears, but also that I am double exposing with nature, like plants and trees and rocks This photograph is like Jasper James because they both keep the identity hidden as if it was a celebrity. Some important differences is, Jasper James takes city landscapes pictures from a skyscraper whilst Christoffer Relander takes close up pictures of nature and takes them from ground level.

The objects I would say look closer to me would be the leaves, because it gives that 3D effect that the leaves are poking out of the persons skin. And for the objects that seem further away would be the background, because the way the person is positioned, would not give you the feeling that the model is pressed/ leaned against the wall. The colors are made in black and white, but as if it was made a century ago, because with age the white turns almost into a very faint hue of yellow. The color used the most in this final outcome development would be, the color white mainly because the background is white. But also the nature picture has been left with the background white; which is difficult to see as the way his camera angle is positioned, it mainly cuts out the background, but if you look into greater detail you see some of the background still manage to be able to be seen. This photograph was double exposed in a way to give you that feeling of anxiety, because when you have an anxiety attack, it is almost as if you cant feel your face and feel as if your face was to be crowed from something, giving a claustrophobic feeling. This person in this photograph looks as if it has a lot on its mind, as one leaf represents one thought. Just from the final outcome of this development, I already can indicate that the person has lived a very stressful compacted life, but knowing it is the thought of nature it also portrays for the model to have lived a rather peaceful life in the wild. I arrived to this idea due to the background being a peaceful and warm white, whilst the nature image that has been double exposed onto the models face looks a tranquil and relaxed part of nature. The most important part of the picture would be that, the models face features has been covered up almost as if hiding something from someone.

for my first contact sheet of Chrtoffer Relander, this photoshoot was my best outcome of unit 2. The ones I liked the best and wanted to use to do more editing into the style of Christoffer Relander, I circled in red. The images I took, that I was going to double expose onto the portraits, hands and jar developments, were taken abroad for when I went to Italy, showing that I am expanding my knowledge on how and where to take photos. and for my portrait photos I took them after school in the studio room using natural lighting as the day was very sunny, giving a different type of contrast; with the camera angle was taken from eye point of view. whilst the hand photos, I took were on a white piece of paper, placed on the table, and used a light box to not give too much shadow, with the camera angle being a birds eye of view. The jar photos were taken with the white paper being stuck to the wall whilst the other end was on the table, I used a light box to give the images a different composition, with the camera angle being close up and zoomed into the jar; I painted the jar black on the inside just so then you could see the light reflection but also make it better to be double exposing them. Overall the photoshoot was a great success, because I kept the theme in the style of my artist (Christoffer Relander) and the lighting could not have gone any better. One thing I am aiming to change for my next photoshoot, is to do more close up pictures to the nature, instead of landscape pictures of nature.

Christoffer Relander developments - Jars

For my 1st jar developments final outcome, I did mainly black and white developments, which is a key concept about my developments, for some of them I did a multi coloured edit which you can not see unless you look into greater detail. I did 9 jar developments  and experimented on how to double expose the images together, whilst keeping the theme related to Christoffer Relander. I did the background completely white almost as if there was no background giving it a strange effect; I did the background white because, my artists work has always been in white background. I kept the final outcome of these developments as a smooth / calming texture, as nature connotes peace, I also did these edits with a really harsh type of lighting placed on the jars, with the aperture being open to create of a more flashy picture, so it would remove any shadow in the background. I did these pictures with the camera close up, as the white piece of paper was a A3, so I had limited space, meaning for my photos to be as close up as possible to cut out the classroom background to get in the edges. My favourite aspects would be that, I took the nature pictures in Italy, giving me more contextual knowledge and expanding my range of photographs, but also that I kept the theme in the style of my artist. One thing to improve on my next shoot is the way my portrait picture are being poses / expressed in a different way.

Christoffer Relander developments -Hands

for my first hand final outcome, I did 9 developments, doing full black ad white edits for all of them, as they were the best outcome from my jar development, so I decided to stick to black and white edits, but also because my idea was to keep the theme related to my artist. I also kept the background white, giving that effect that it was as if there was no background, I also used a lightbox from birds eye of view, giving a really harsh lighting to the image, the light was shining directly onto the hand, as the natural lighting was causing too much shadow, making it difficult to double expose after. These hand pictures were taken from birds eye of view angle, so then it would not contradict the , whilst the hand was pressed against the paper on the table, so then it could not get any of the classroom background in. Once I started editing, I concluded that I was going to make the foreground (hand) contrasted, to make it stick out / 3D, from the background, juxtaposing the foreground and background. My key aspects would be that the double exposure was not too harsh due to me lowering the opacity making the picture look as if it was imprinted directly onto the models hand, I also managed to keep the contrasting and lighting to a manner that it relates to my artists work, as it is not too flashy or contrasted. For my next hand developments, I want to explore in further detail by taking the hand pictures with two hands instead of one, portraying the depth of exploration in my Christoffer Relander.

Christoffer Relander developments - portraits

For my first Portraits developments, I did all of the final outcomes in a Black and White composition, because I am aiming to keep my work as much related to the them of my artist as possible. The portrait pictures were taken with a white background so then, it would be easier to double expose the image with the portrait pictures together. For the camera angle, I decided to keep the camera angle one a persons point of view, whilst the pictures were taken quite close up, due to my whole unit 2 being based on identity, so I could show some of my face features keeping the identity bait. The lighting was a very harsh lighting, so it could keep the persons face contrast, more equal, but also to cut out any of the shadow, as the natural lighting would have caused a parasite worth of shadow. I decided to change the brightness and contrast, where I would increase the light to make the background as less visible as I could, but also increased the contrast so then the models face features were evened out. The key aspects that I like, that turned out to be a success in my portrait developments, is that I did the double exposing just like my artist, due to me lowering the opacity making the persons identity (face features) difficult to see, unless you zoom into greater detail. For my nest photoshoot of portraits, I aim to do, portrait pictures of where my hands are involved, combining the two juxtaposes, hand developments and portrait developments as one, showing I am experimenting with my work into greater detail.

Christoffer Relander redraft developments - hand and portraits

further development canvas.jpg

For my first further developments, I did three hand, three portrait and a canvas of jars, edits. For my hand further developments, I picked out three of nine best developments and explored them mainly with overlaying and mirroring the two of the same images together, to give a strange effect to my work, whilst keeping the concept / theme similar to my artist work did  my mirroring / overlaying the image together by drawing with the quick select tool, then after copied and pasted the image together. For my portrait further developments, the key aspects, is that I experimented my work into further composition by doing a whole canvas of my best jar developments outcome.

For my re-draft contact sheet, I did the nature pictures in Italy, when there was a sunset setting in, experimenting with different styles of nature but keeping it related to the theme that my artist does. I also did pictures of multiple rocks on the floor, as there was a development my artist did that experimented using rocks, giving a new concept to double exposing. For my jar and hand photos, they were taken in school using harsh lighting, to remove any shadow but to also even the contrasting on the hand and jars, the camera angle were taken close up as I did not want any excess background (classroom) being involved. The portrait pictures were taken at my house using natural lighting, as well as the living room lighting. The portrait photoshoot, I used two models one female and one male, to give more of an understanding to different gender identities, exploring with my work into further detail. These portraits pictures were taken with a white background to keep my theme related to my artists work, then camera angle was taken from the persons point of view, whilst being close up as there was a limit of white background, the pictures were taken with the model being in the centre of the camera. Overall the re-draft photoshoot was a success as the pictures that were experimented with came out better than last photoshoot. The key aspects that I like, would be the lighting used to take these pictures, were not too dark but bright enough to where there was no any excess shadows involved.

Once done, hide the nature image by using the eye tool on the right side of the screen, and quick select the hands outline, leave the background out of it, and remerge the nature picture, then copy and paste the nature image again, to where the outline of the hand has been covered by the nature picture

step 9 : lower the opacity to an considerable extent, that the nature edit looks like as if it was tattooed onto the models hand, then use the eraser tool and draw the edges of the hand to the point it smoothens the edges.

Christoffer Relander redraft photoshoot - jars

For my re-draft jar developments, I did 9 black and white outcomes, experimenting my work in many different types of varieties. I changed the camera angle to where the jar developments came out with different styles, because the last photoshoot jar developments I spoke about making the next photoshoot developments (jars) using different angles. I used harsh lighting, so it could reflect off the jar, making it look more interesting, I also used lighting, to where it was directly shining onto the jars so then it would remove the shadow and keep the theme more relatable to my artist. I kept the background white, because my all artists final outcome were made with a white background, I did the white background as if it there were no borders behind the jar, giving that feeling that the jar has been placed into the abyss. The nature pictures were all made black and white, as the last time I analysed my first jar development, I spoke a  about keeping my work in black and white as they were the best outcomes. The key aspects about my success in this re-draft photoshoot of jars developments, would be that I experimented my work, changing it up from last time (camera angle and lighting), giving a different idea on double exposing. If i could change what I did, it would be to keep the jar in the middle of my page.

Christoffer Relander redraft photoshoot - hands

For my re-draft development hand outcomes, I did a range of two hand edits, with different poses for each, exploring my work into further composition, I did 2 edits out of 9 using only a single hand. These edits were made in black and white, keeping my theme and style of work the same throughout my whole artist page. For some two hand development, I changed the whole work up by making two nature edits, double exposing one of the nature edit on one hand and the other one on the other hand, juxtaposing the hands. The pictures were taken with a white A3 paper placed on a classroom table, and the camera angle taking the pictures from birds eye of view. The models hands was placed against the paper, but there was too much shadow even with the classroom lighting, so I used the lightbox to remove any shadow and excess contrast on the hands from the reflection of the natural light. the key aspect, is that I did not keep the nature image too visible I lowered the opacity to an extent where you would see the image as someone with tatted hands, giving an abnormal effect to it, the reason why I did was because when I researched my artists final outcomes all hand developments were done in the style as me, showing my work to be relatable to my artist.

Christoffer Relander redraft photoshoot - portraits

For my re-draft face development, I did all of my outcomes in a Black and white composition, because I aim to keep my work as much related to Christoffer Relander as possible. I also decided to change up my models identity, where I did male and female identity photographs, because I wanted to to show a greater knowledge on different type of identities in the word identity. I decided to take pictures of my hands involved in the portrait developments, combining the two  juxtaposing, exploring my work into greater detail. I took these pictures with a white background, as that is the only background my artist ever used to do his work, I did this because I am trying to compete with my artist, whilst keeping the theme the same. I also did these pictures, using the photographers point of view  as my camera angle, but I also kept the camera angle quite close up as the background is not important the models identity / face features is. I explored using different type of poses and style, to show the sense of experimenting by not keep on doing the same pose, but by always switching it up, and finding out what comes out to be more of a success. The key aspect is that I increased the brightness to the point there was not any shadow on the white background, but also increased the contrast to where the models face had some bit of contrasting to where the key face features would stand out from the rest of the face and body.

Christoffer Relander redraft photoshoot - further developments

For my re-draft further developments, I picked 5 best face developments and I mirrored them together, to the point it was overlapping each other. I explored different techniques, where or some of them the portrait model would be looking towards each other whilst the rest looked away from each other, giving a sense that there are conjoined twins. And for my hand developments, I did mirroring techniques, but completely opposite style than the portraits, as they were more experimented with, where some were flipped over, whilst the other image stayed at the same level as it was before, giving a distorted feeling to it. The key aspects is that all my mirroring developments were done using different techniques and still turned out to become even more of a success than the last further developments.

Christoffer Relander higlighting success

For my highlighting success, I picked out 5 best developments of my portrait, as well as jar developments and as well as hand developments. I did this to conclude my work by showing my best developments throughout this whole artist page. The key aspects of these pictures, and the reason why I picked them, was based to the fact they were all the most related theme to my artist, but still managed to become even more of a success, due to the decrease in opacity, making the nature image look as if it was imprinted onto the models face or hands or even the jars.
