ARTIST ANALYSIS -
SHILPA GUPTA
The first artist I have selected to explore is Shlpa Gupta. I have chosen this artist due to the unusual compositions and iconic use of colour she employs.
Shilpa was born in Mumbai, India 1976. My instant reaction when looking at her work was that it looked simplistic and minimalistic, but echoed a deep meaning through her careful selection of items she captures. Her work makes me feel intrigued to investigate her work more, especially in relation to her use of composition which is something I will seek to explore in my own work in response . The subject matter of her work is very simplistic. The items she selects to capture, for example, in her piece to the left, are household objects and snippets of the sky. What is most intriguing about her work, is the way she captures these simplistic objects. As you can see from the example, she captures them at odd and unusual angles and I would argue, on some level challenging the conventions and 'norms' of photography in relation to composition.
In addition to the odd images and compositions, I can see that she edits her work to increase the saturation. These is to create a greater sense of importance in her selection of colours and the order in which she places said colours.
Her work relates to this project of identity as I think in some of her work she is trying to show us who she is a person and what she likes. If i got to ask her a question I would ask her, What made her take images of the sky?

PHOTOSHOOT PLAN

CONTACT SHEET (1) RAW IMAGES

My intentions for my photoshoot was to take images when i was out of the ocean blue sky and beautiful trees and forests. I took these images in Holland park and from trees around the area . I took these images to try an replicate what Shilpa does in her wonderful work because in her work she takes images of the canopy. Some of the successful elements of my work were the sun light captured in the background of some of the images and the light blue sky. However some of my images were unsuccessful as some of them came out blurry. If i had the opportunity to take my images again i would make sure my images aren't blurry and i would take more in different angles. I believe i have more then enough photos for Shilpa Gupta's work.
DEVELOPMENTS SERIES 1 - EXPERIMENTING WITH COMPOSITION AND SPACE

In these edits i have cropped my images so that i have more space to add more of my images to one of them so it almost looks like a border around my images and so it looks like Shilpa Gupta's work. I done this because Shilpa almost does this in her work so i wanted to make my work look almost identical to hers. I also apprehended my images by lowing the brightness by the littlest bit and the contrast by a little. I chose to crop my images as in her work she almost add loads of little images into one. This artist relates to the topic as you can show your identity through objects and colour. I like the aspects of how she could show her personality and identity through images. I think i could improve this work by taking images a different places where the sky looks good and where i could capture the canopy with the sky as well. Next i will take images a different places on the weekend for my re-draft.
REDRAFT PHOTOSHOOT (2) RAW IMAGES CONTATC SHEET

My intentions for this shoot were to take images of the sky and images of the canopy. I took these pictures as this is almost what Shilpa Gupta does in her photoshoots to capture her photos. What I find successful with my photoshoot is how i capture the trees swaying in the wind. However some unsuccessful elements was the weather as it wasn't sunshine and rainbows outside it was quiet dull, dark and depressing. The wind also didn't help me apprehend my images. If i took these images again i would try and take them on a brighter day and take more of a variety of trees and bushes. I believe i have more then enough images needed for this artist.
DEVELOPMENTS SERIES (2) EXPERIMENTING WITH COLOUR AND COMPOSITION

In these edits i have edited my images in the style of Shilpa Gupta . I done this by lowering the brightness and contrast by the slightest and increasing the canverse size and add images so it looks like Shilpa Gupta's work. I chose to use increase the canverse because in Shilpa's work it looks like there are borders around her image. I'm not to sure how her work fits in with out project of identity but i think it could be to use objects to represent who you are as a person. I like how her images are quiet simple in a way and how it just the sky. I could improve by taking pictures of the trees at different angles and making sure the images aren't blurry. Next I'm going to do further developments of Shilpa Gupta's work.
FURTHER DEVELOMENTS - EXPERIMENTING WITH LAYERING/DOUBLE EXPOSURE AND COMPOSITION

PHOTOSHOOT 3 (EXPLORING TEXTURE INSPIRED BY SHILPA GUPTA

My intentions for this shoot was to build on what i already done last time such as add nails on top of my image to try and replicate Shilpa gupta's work. I took these images i last time i think my images could've been a little better. In my work i think the nails on top of my images was very successful as that's what Shilpa does in her work. Another thing that worked well was the compositions of the images. However some unsuccessful elements of my work is that i captured the edge of the table in some of my images . If I were to take my images again I would use different trees an use more of a variety and put different objects on my photos. I think i have all the images I need for Shilpa Gupta and Identity.
DEVELOPMENTS SERIES - EXPERIMENTING WITH LIGHTING

In my edits i have edited my images in the style of Shilpa Gupta but differentiated them a little. I done this by highering the curve so my images would be brighter and by changing the colour look up. I chose to change the colour lookup as it made my images look even better and i made my work look different to hers but in a good way. I like the aspects of how the images layer over the top of each other and how the composition of the nails are just on top of the images. I'm not too sure how I could improve my work as i think the images are quite good.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS EXPERIMENTING WITH COMPOSITION

In these developments i have put my Shilpa Gupta images into compositions. I done this because I thought it would look really nice. I done this by using the C and V keys then putting them into compositions. I also increased the brightness to make the images stand out. I chose to take images of trees in compositions with nails on them because i tried to replicate Shilpa Gupta's work. This work fits into our project because the objects and trees represent your personality. I like the aspects of how there are nails and object on top of the image. I think i could improve by using different images of trees and different objects.
