Gerhard Richter

The work I'm going to be exploring is the landscape work of Gerhard Richter. He was born in 1932 February 9 in Dresden Germany. The work in particular I'm investigating is his work series of landscapes. My instant reaction when looking at Gerhard's work is that it looks almost calm, restful and tranquil. When looking at the work of Gerhard Ritcher it looks quiet peaceful and looks like the country side. His work is of the canopy, bushes and the country side and has the sun beaming from the horizon. Gerhard work reminds me of  me of my previous artist Shilpa Gupta as she also takes images of the canopy and the horizon. I'm not to sure what Gerhard is trying to say in his landscape work, however Gerhard also takes images of blurred paintings he does this by use the squeegee technique. This relates to the project as he explores identity through the canopy and landscapes. If i got the opportunity to ask Gerhard Ritcher a question I would ask him, why choose to be a photographer? Personally i think his work is very peaceful and pleasant to the eye. For my work i would take the element of how he take images of the landscapes and the bushes. I also chose to do Gerhard Ritcher because he links back to my recent artist Shilpa Gupta and when i was doing images in the style of her i found it fun.

Contact sheet

My intentions for this shot was to capture images in the style of Gerhard to try and replicate his work and how he takes his images. In my work some of the successful elements were how clear and clean my images came out another thing that was successful was the images came out how i wanted them to come out. However some elements weren't so successful like how a couple came out a little blurry and in some of them the lighting was a little dark. if i got to take my images again i would take my images in different angles and different distances as there all from straight in front of the trees. I believe i have enough images for this artist.

Process log

1.jpg

In this image i have cropped the images to make empty space

2.jpg

I copy and pasted one of my images onto one of my edits so my work could be in a series so i would be in the style of Gerhard Richter.

3.jpg

In have added another images to the series so it looks like Gerhard's work.

DEVELOPMENTS EXPERIMENTING WITH COLOUR AND COLOUR LOOK UP

In these edits i have cropped my images so there is empty space like in Gerhard work and how he uses empty space to make a series of edits into one images. I done this because in Gerhard work he does series of developments so i replicated this by cropping my images bigger and i lowered the brightness and contest slightly.i chose to do this as i want my work to be as close as possible to Gerhard's work. Gerhard's work links with the theme of identity as i could've token images of landscapes that resemble me as a person and things i like. I drew using the burning tool to darken a couple of my images. I like the aspects of how there is a series of developments in one image. I could improve by maybe laying out the images different in the edits. Next i will do a redraft for Gerhard to improve my work even more and take different types of images of trees and landscapes.

Further Developments - experimenting with composition

In these edits I have done compositions by using three images into one image by almost creating a border from the background. I done this by using the C and V key to copy and paste my images onto photoshop. I then using the created empty space. I chose to make my compositions like that as in Gerhard's he has them next to each other. His work fits in with the project as i think the work of trees and landscapes resemble who you are. I like the aspects of how simple the images look when the edits to make take a little time. I could improve by taking my images from all different angles. Next i will be taking images in the style of Serrah russell as she takes images similar to Gerhard Richter.

Experimenting with double exposure and compositions

In this experiment I have built on my previous edits on composition. I done this by first double exposing two of my Gerhard Richter edits together. Then I used a border from the internet and place it over the top of the image then used the quick select tool to create the holes in the images. I chose to use borders to create the empty pace and compositions in between each image. His art work fits in with the project as the trees and compositions resemble him. I like the fact that the use of the borders leave a gap in between each image when really its one single image. I think i could improve by doing more of them or by using different compositions. Next i will used what i have done with Gerhard Richter to help me do my next artist.
