Dexter Navy
Dexter Navy is a filmmaker and a photography artist. Across both mediums his aim is to create work that is psychedelic, cinematic and at all times holds an authentic feelings. Dexter's career began at age 18 when I-D magazine stumbled across his photographs on tumbler and asked him to start shooting for them. Furthermore Dexter Navy was fresh from shooting A$AP Rocky's new video, Dexter curated 36 of his favorite images from a number of different shoots and locations worldwide, all shot on his Yoshika T4 camera with Carl Zeiss. Moving on his his Nikon camera had an aspect ratio of 16:9 HD and a Arri Alexa Arriflex 435 (high- speed shots) Nikon D800 Sony (2008) Sony HDWF900 and modified by Panavision. The negative format is a 35mm ( high speed shots ) ARRIRAW video (HDTV). On top of that Dexter Navy who is my artist for identify, explores collages with a fashion and modern and some with a spice of 90s and 80s look. His work is known for exploring different cultures and bringing about a lots of different composition to each image to make each and every one of them look different and give it a unique texture. In addition I have seen that Dexter Navy also explores about changing his images to black and white and makes his work very simple but effective to look at with the human eye. Additionally Dexter Navy is really precious about their lighting, which is typically artificial light. In many of his work I have seen that his noise in his images are increased by 15% to 30%, which creates a very sophisticated 80s look to his work overall. Moving over I find his work very inspirational and a choice of artist that was suggested, that I am very exited to create work similar to Dexter Navy as his work is very exiting to look at. Continuing, this artist is significantly the same as my first identity artist wo was Clayton Patterson, because both of the artists explore culture outdoors and edits their work in a form of collages. Also the lengths the images are taken in are the same as Dexter Navy captures his work in a medium and short shot and Clayton Patterson Also capturing his images in a Medium and short shot. Over and above that Dexter Navy's images are very vividly bright with colors bouncing around everywhere with colorful filters and some being black and white. Navy also explores composition, which he is very precise and careful in every image, as you can see on your right. Furthermore composition also determines the path of a viewer's eye through the photo. Even though you can't know the exact path a viewer's eye is going to take, you can nudge things one way or another. Moving on the a key feature that is very detectable is his use of colors. For example after viewing his work I can notice that he utilizes the color green, red and blue extensively. I find this very effective as the hue red evoke emotions ranging from feelings of warmth and comfort to feelings of anger and hostility; the hue blue instils peace, tranquility, calmness and serenity, helping to reduce anxiety, aggression, as well as high blood pressure and heart rates; and lastly the hue green is a dominant color in nature that makes you think of growth. Think of nature and see the incredible variety of shades of green expressing renewal and life. Green evokes a feeling of abundance and is associated with refreshment and peace, rest and security. Green helps people feel rested and secure. The way Dexter Navy brings all of these colors that have their major differences, but is still able to make a sophisticated looking image, really astonishes me and the main reason why I have chosen Navy to be my second Identity artist. Into the bargain the main aspect that makes an image look in order is the camera angles and the camera angles Dexter Navy chooses are very much appropriate for his setting. He utilizes the close-up shot. The close-up is a shot often taken at relatively close range on a longer lens. The benefit of the close up is that it gives us a detailed and intimate look we might normally miss.

Photo-shoot planning shoot

Contact-sheet I

On your left is my pictures that I have captured over the weekend in west London Portobello W11 2DL road and Bayswater W11 2AH.
I went with a couple of my mates and told them to stand in a good area that has good composition and good dynamic lighting. I also held my cannon camera in portrait and landscape position, while I was capturing my pictures at a medium, short and long range shot. Additionally I told my mates to do their natural pose while for some of them looked at the camera lens and some didn't, which was perfectly fine in my work. The images that I really liked (through capturing my work in the style of Dexter Navy) I made sure to circle those that are the ones that I will be editing and going to be digging down deeper in depth for detail. Furthermore the cloths ware that were dressed by my mates were made sure to be fresh and sophisticated as they would be the main focus of my images. In these contact sheets I have seen that I have successfully captured a significant amount of different and causals looks to give the best and specatacular look of Dexter Navy.
On your right, you will be able to view my pictures that are based in Westfield Shepard Bush W12 7GF and High street Kensington W8 4SH. Firstly for my photoshop I looked over my photoshoot plan that I had made previously to guide me through my shoot. For the majority of my pictures I took a short range shot, to really zoom in to the effort of detail that has been shown. Moving on I continued to use the same knowledge that I had previously from Clayton Patterson, which is similar to Dexter Navy. Furthermore the composition and the important features that were needed for this shoot was successful overall, as when I was capturing these images I was acknowledging the success and improved the pictures by taking them more than once and helping the pupils with some ideas I had seen by having my phone switched on and on Dexter Navy's website to help me with my ideas, were improvement was needed. Lastly the most common images were that the majority were in the same location, but had different composition.

My work, in the style of Dexter Navy is on your left hand side if you hover yours eyes and will see that it is at a location of Portobello road and consists of 72 images that I have taken. Moving on the I have captured the following images in a short and medium range dynamic shot, which provoked the movement and details to stand out more in the lens of my canon camera. Furthermore the angles in my images were very precise as that technique is a key feature to make an image successful according to Dexter Navy. Into the bargain if you look at the top of my contact sheets u can see that they are gathered around a table outside a shop, which worked very well for the composition and the different aspects it had for my edited pieces, which I was already planning ahead. Lastly the images that were circled are the pictures that I believe will be editing for editing collages in the style of Dexter Navy.
The following images that were circled on your right is the images that has been considered to my interest to be edited just to clarify. for these images I travelled to two locations, which were Westfield and Queensway underground. I specifically went to the underground at a specific time ( 8:15) because I wanted to capture a certain amount of images with the background being empty and just having the composition to be focused on. Furthermore I had to take in interest to not to use the flash on my camera because it could interrupt the trains drivers vision, so I had to take that into account in the process of capturing images in the style of Dexter Navy. Additionally I experimanted with the motion of my camera as I saaw my artist change it up in some of his images.

Moving on the main challenge that I had faced through my photoshoot was different ideas because I did have the inspiration of viewing Dexter Navy's work, but I my aim was too change up his work in my ideas and experiment in his ideas. The most errors that I have seen is my patience. This is because I mostly captured an image in around 10 to 15 seconds or so, but I should of taken longer and more of my time as I could of captured the beauty of art that was surrounded by the composition and got it involved with my image and mixed it with Dexter Navy's work. Lastly the most frustrating error was that I mostly captured my images in medium range and short range, but rarely long range ( only for massive buildings ) which narrowed down the details in the background and just gave the viewer just a clear vision on the composition but not the background.
The success in my images that I have highlighted with a red circle is that it had approval of at least 2 efficient techniques that were used in good use to create an image of beauty and youth. These techniques were average lighting (commonly artificial lighting) sophisticated composition to bring the image much more detail and life into it. Furthermore the range of the angle that the image it taken is important, but can be changed in the process of photoshop if wanted, which makes it not a big of a deal but still need to be put to reminder as it can make an image less effective. Into the bargain I have gathered from my photos that I have gathered a good collection of images because I had my photo-shoot plan to help me through the adventure I had and when I was stuck with ideas.

Process Log

STEP 2) I used my images that have good composition, while creating a collage with all my edited images to be as one. I drew my image with the saturation tool

STEP 1) I gathered 4 of my images that I have captured over the weekend and I used the black and white tool , and the gradient tool on 2 of them and double exposing the pink image

STEP 3) I edited 4 different images and put them in one collage, while for my black and white image, I drew with the burn tool to darken my image.

Edits in the style of Dexter Navy

My developments, you can see. Is my work inspired from my artist Dexter Navy. Firstly I gathered a sum of images that I had liked. Then I placed the main image in the middle and scattered around smaller images that is related to the main image and either changed the smaller image to BLACK AND WHITE or the main image to BLACK AND WHITE and left the smaller images to be their natural colour. But for some I went on the internet and typed up vibrant colours to DOUBLE EXPOSE them on top of my work, to match the vibe of Dexter Navy, which he does to most of his famous work. Secondly I organised my images in a unique placement (thought that out very carefully) to give my images a twist and to not look dull. Moving on I used the filter to increase the noise on a significant amount of my images to make them look vintage and was shot a long time ago. Furthermore I cropped the image to be bigger which left the background to be white, so I used the eyedropper tool and placed it on my image that has the most common colour and then used the rectangle tool to make the white background the main colour the image was for example the majority was black. In addition I typed up on the internet Embossed label Generator, then typed in the following words I wanted the website to generate (JAW, QUITE, DISCOVERY, MINDSET, FUN, DIFFERENT, FREEDOM, CHANGE, RESTLESS and OPPORUNITY) are the words I used on my work, as does Dexter Navy indicates on his work. Thirdly, the reason I picked the colours; red, green, pink and orange is because that those are the most common colours that are used in Dexter Navy's work and fit well with mine. Additionally, while I was editing my work I had another tab opened on my left screen to give inspiration for me on how to edit my work like Dexter Navy and Successfully made the majority of my work to look similar to his work, which I believe to make my work flattering and adequate.

Contact sheet II

On my right is my photoshoot I taken over the weekend in the style of Dexter Navy. I went to numerous locations I had in my mind and, which fitted the vibes of my artist. I first visited Notting hill gate, as it is always busy in day and night. The success of Notting hill gate in regards to my images was exceptional, because the location consisted of Very good dynamic artificial lighting, which enabled my photos to not be dark and boring. Furthermore the success of the area was good as the background was not to boring, but gave my images to vibrant colours to them. In order for me to capture work in the style of Dexter Navy I instructed my friends to pose in a natural figure, as composition gave my photos a unique look. Moving 0n I held my camera in quite a few angles; for example long range, short range and medium range in order to capture different accepts of the same image and pick out the best bits to edit them for the future.
Furthermore on my right are 2 full contact sheets that are in a location of Queen ways at 9:00 in the afternoon. Before taking these images I thought to my self of the composition I can improve on in my first photoshoot of Dexter Navy so I told my friend to go in a telephone box and do whatever pose he likes while I am staring down in my canon camera in a medium range, while the artificial lighting from an outdoor shop perfected my images as u can see on your left. Moving on I circled the individual pictures that I believe came out at the standard I wanted it to be, so as a result I will be editing those in the near by future. I have spotted out my success by circling those and leaving out those that are not up to my standard, which will show me ways to improve my techniques in taking images

For my last 2 contact sheets I acknowledged my other previous photos and experimented a little differently and tried to recrate Dexter Navy's work as my own. So I showed my friend his work and told him to take notes of his work for us to create a piece of sophisticated work. Moving on the lighting was incredible because out location was a carpark we found while we were walking around my own area and went in it and experimented in different composition and dynamic angles to really bring out the background and the location for my work. If you hover your eyes over to the bottom left side of your screen you will see that I mostly stuck my mind on close dynamic range to really bring out all the little details in his face#, such as his wrangles, facial hair and face parts. Lastly I should say for my overall point that the most successful part of the photoshoot was when I used my photo plan sheet to help me through my photoshoot because for some time I felt stuck in what to do.
Refraining Edits in the style of Dexter Navy II

These are my final outcome of my images after the after math of my editing skills and techniques that I have gathered over the past couple weeks I have been studying photography and used all of them to my advantage to create work in the style of Dexter Navy, who is my identity artist for this half-term. For most of my edited work I selected an image of a pupil and double exposed a random vibrant colour on top of the image. Then I selected the crop tool to widen my image outwards. Then I added another image that is to the same context of my main image but for the background and changed the colour to black and white and used the curve tool to dim my image. Then I selected 4 other images that is related to my first main image and made the four images smaller to it can fit in the background layer to give the same vibe as Dexter Navy. Lastly I normally picked one to two small images to black and white to blend it in the background. I found these type of edits very effective and because it matched the style of my artist. Moving on for a different parts of my image I mirrored my image and turned the mirrored image horizontally and then picked two images that relate to each over and place them in between the mirrored images. To sum up everthing is that I ery much enjoyed editing my work in the style of Dedter NAvy becasue it is very interesting what he does and allows me to spice his work up in my way using my images.

The image that is above me, in my opinion very effective as I used an object and placed a fish eye lens on the lens of my camera to give the look you can see above me and as so Dexter navy does in my his images. Furthermore I got a vary of different colors and double exposed them onto my images to make every single one of them different and unique to them self.

Black and white
For my further developments edits that are in the style of Dexter Navy, I used my images that were completed, and changed the filter to black and white to remove any distraction of colour and helps viewers focus on other aspects of the photo, such as the subject, the textures, shapes and patterns, and the composition, so you can use all the same composition techniques - like the rule of thirds - that you'd use in colour photography. Moving on I have experimented with changing the saturation colour's on whatever fits my image the best in terms of the appearance of the work. Personally, work and art that are in black and white are always effective and appealing to look at because it brings out all the detail vividly that cannot be seen with just normal color.

Mirroring Developments

On your left is my mirroring developments in the style of Dexter Navy (my artist) Firstly I opened my documents and chose my edited images to mirror, then I used the crop tool to widen my image to the same length as the main image. And then I used the rectangle morgue tool to copy the image and mirror it but just flipping it to be 180 degrees as you can see. I really liked this technique in photography because it is yet so simple, but so effective in terms of looks and simplicity. I experimented with 12 images that are all fairly different in their own ways but still give he vibe of Dexter Navy. Moving on I believe that images are simply matching the standards of my artist and even consists more photography techniques, as in my time viewing Dexter Navy's work I have not came across an image that he has edited it to be mirrored.

Double exposure
For my double exposures, I experimented with different types of images and put them in too one, you can see this on your right. I went for a more of a colorful look then from my previous developments, as hey were quite dark, but still good. The steps on how I edited these images were as follows. I gathered two completed images that were made by me, and I used the overlay tool and overlaid the two images together. Furthermore this editing technique, is sophisticated and advanced, as it allows two images to be as one, which really elevates my tone of work. It absorbs out the details, that is unseen.

Highlighting success

For my edits in the style of Dexter Navy I used different apertures to bring my images as a collective a very good and different look to my other artists, while having some things that link back. Into the bargain I have chosen these following images to be in my highlighted success because they consists everything that I was hoping to use in my photo-plan and really gives the vibe of Dexter Navy if a random person views my work and even to my self in a sense. In addition I really likes the ways I used different types of words and scattered them around on my edited piece as so my artist does. This technique was seen in the image on your left. additionally I used the crop tool to make my images a little bit smaller and produce them in different sizes so they could all fit on one screen and in a very unique design and in a specialized look. Lastly the colors that I used to double expose my images are very effective and also the colors that Dexter Navy mostly uses in his work and really gives off his vibe.

GIF's

For my GIF developments I have used the same technique's, as I used for my Clayton Patterson to develop my images into GIF's. I gathered a bunch of numerous edited images that were completed and then I placed them on top of each over in the same frame size, while saving each of them individually. Moving on I carefully thought out about the speed loop of my GIF, because the slower it is the less exiting it will be, so I chose to pick a speed in between fast and slow.

Hand made pieces in the style of Deter Navy.

The images that you can see, is my hand made pieces in the style of Dexter Navy. I printed all the images that I found that consisted of good composition, lighting and much more. Furthermore I used masking tape to stick down my work, which gave much more of a look and allowed my work to be similar in a way with Dexter Navy, in terms of the hand made pieces of work he function.
.jpg)

Moving on I created 6 pieces of art on A4 paper, featuring different colors on each paper for example; black, green and grey. Additionally I cut out the pieces of paper that had words in the form of black and red and stuck those on the sheet of paper in different places, which gave the same vibe and energy of the way my artist does to his work.
Refraining Developing physical developments
These physical pieces are developments, that I have produced in the style of Dexter Navy. They are developments, inspired by his range and methods of technique's. I really enjoyed the experience, as the variety of techniques and methods, I successfully arranged techniques of composition, dynamic lighting and just the way I refrained my work, in terms of collages. For this outcome, I used tape to stick my cut out images on a brawny, thick piece of paper, to give my work a miniature detail, that will my work look cordial, alluring and charming. Producing physical pieces, really elevated my work with a great amount of contingent and attribute.
