Unit 2 - Identity

Identity

What is Identity?

Identity is defined as 'the fact of who or what a person or thing is'. Although this is correct,  it can be described more deeply. Identity is the reaction you have to someone insulting you. To someone hugging you. To someone ignoring you. Everyone will have different reactions to those scenarios but who you are and what you would do is you and your identity. Your identity can be shown with how you dress, how you style your hair, who you are friends with. Characteristics you can change. But also things about you and your life which you cannot change, such as your religion, your race or your family. Identity is who you are inside and how you feel about yourself.

Mind Map

A mind map is the base of the topic of your choice. Whichever subject, the words and ideas that stem from it can inspire you for the future. As my topic is Identity, I focused on everything that can influence you and who you are. This includes the environment around you, your family, your religion, your personality, your appearance. My mind map has helped me choose my photographers and will continue to aid me in the future when I am in need of a reminder of what I am focusing on and what my artist should be photographing. The whole idea of Identity is extremely broad and in need of a simplifier. This is what the different branches in my mind map help the most with. After choosing a less broad topic eg. Gender, I can divide it into more sections such as male, female and non-binary. This makes identity easier to talk about in an analysis and can help with understanding the topic more.

Mood Board

Identity - Mood Board.jpg

A mood board consists of ideas, mediums and influences for a topic of choice. As my topic is Identity, my board contains images with subjects such as body dysmorphia, expectations from society and  all types of  distortion. My mind has helped me to choose my artists to discover in more detail and has also given me more ideas for links and further developments to those artists. All my images look different but are all linked to the same idea and are therefore similar in concept. I chose to mainly focus on hidden identity and distortion. This mood board influenced my decision as the most interesting images displayed in my opinion are the ones which focus mainly on hiding their identity form the world and themselves.
