Chloe Sheppard

For my independent project I was given the opportunity to pick my own artist and take pictures in the style of theirs. As I was looking through the artists I came across this girl names Chloe Sheppard. Chloe Sheppard is a 20 year old female artist  that has been featured in I-D magazine, shot for Nylon Japan, Rookie Mag and done an editorial for Adidas. She continues to be a pioneer for young female photographers in 2016, and I caught up with her biography from different sights to understand a bit more about her. Sheppard  explores the lives of her friends through her camera. Her fairy tale and dream-like images has taken the internet by storm. Her 70’s style portraits capture the glamour and excitement of what being a teenage girl is like. I found out that she got into photography seriously when she was only 13. She'd always been interested in art; as a kid she'd spend her days creating things, painting, drawing or making videos. But it was through photography that she was truly able to express herself.

I would describe Chloe's work as soft and dreamy also very cliché. It also reminds me of Pinterest as you can find the style of her pictures on there aswell. I find her work also linked to Lana Del Rey as her pictures have the same style as Chloe.

In Chloe's pictures you don't seem to see men at all in her pictures and she was asked why is it so important to have more women behind the camera and this is what she said; "Because it's becoming such a form of rebellion and a way to defy society's standards." Now more than ever girls look at there selves in the mirror and say "I'm too fat" or "I'm so ugly" and that's no way for a girl to speak about her self. Most of this is because of social media, girls look at other girls and compare them selves but don't realize that its actually bringing them down. In my opinion I love that Chloe works with girls in this industry because they can be more of them selves with out thinking they are being judged and that they can feel safer with an environment that is filled with women "there own gender".  Because of the internet people are able to converse and interact like never before, so they're discussing issues like this more, we are more awake as a society and I think Chloe Sheppard has the best way to show it.

These are my contact sheets for my Chloe Sheppard independent project. I managed to achieve everything I said in my photography plan and am very proud of the out come of the pictures. One of my main targets in this session was to enhance a variety of coloured backgrounds in order to highlight vibrancy and saturation. In addition to this I made sure that the models were the main focus captured.

To capture my images I went out during the day at the weekend, making sure the sun was shining to create a bright, light and youthful lighting to my images. I also wanted to aim to use natural light, rather than artificial. I walked around the local area with my mum and sister capturing them both from different angles, but making sure all compositions were long shots to capture the whole body, rather than focusing on close ups. To develop, I would like to experiment with mid and close up shoots to refine my photoshoot in my next redraft. It was important for me to capture the clothes the models were wearing, to relate back Chloe Sheppard's youthful and bubbly style. I asked my models to wear vintage '70's style' clothes, again, to relate back Chloe Sheppard. Overall, I'm very happy with outcome. The images show a connection to Sheppard's work but also include my own ideas inspired by her work.

These are some of my developments i used my most successful photos to showcase them. Since Chloe sheppard dosent edit her pictures much and keeps the very simple i decided that to keep my work as close to hers as possible i should do the same. To do this i just increased the saturation of the pictures and left them how they were.

One of my main targets in this session was to enhance a variety of colored backgrounds in order to highlight vibrancy and saturation. In addition to this I made sure my model(Yara) was able to fit the scenery.

To capture my images I stayed after school and brought some clothes for my model to change and took pictures in the studio room using artificial lighting. I also wanted to aim to use artificial light, rather than rather than natural because i used natural for my last photoshoot and wanted to change is up a bit. i looked at all different angles i could capture my model in, but making sure all compositions were long shots to capture the whole body, rather than focusing on close ups.
