Unit 2: Identity

Daniella Zalcman
Back in the analogue era the multiple exposure was often a budding photographer’s first step towards forging an artistic style. Former architecture student and successful freelance photographer Daniella Zalcman however has turned the form into a love letter of sorts to two beautiful cities. Daniella Zalcman is a Vietnamese-American documentary photographer based on new York and London and she was born in 1986. Her work mainly focuses on the western colonisation and the comparison between London and New York architecture.
The reason why I have decided to select the artist is because I'm intrigued by her use of double expose, as well as the warm colours she creates through her images captured on a film camera. Her images also makes you think about all the different people livening in these areas as there are lots of different people walking around in some of her images. She also gets to travel a lot to take pictures of all of these different landscapes and this also means that she is able to meet the local people there.
One reason why I really enjoy her work is because of all the different colours that pop out at you and lot of different shapes and sizes. Daniella Zalcman also took her images in long shot so she was able to take images of the whole image and the camera will be in lots of different angles and position. Her work also gives you a chance to see all the different monuments in London. I also find her work quite chaotic and abstracted because there is a lot of different thing that are going on in her images and it look very interesting. We can also see that Daniella Zalcman also creates lots of different and interesting patterns whilst double exposing her images and she also creates lots of different lines are from all the different architecture that she has taken images of and this really interests me and make me want to take images that are inspired by her. This also makes the images really abstract as you usually would not see these kinds of images and it is really interesting to look at.
The meaning behind double exposing two cities together is so that we can see that everyone is the same no matter where you are from or were you were born. This also shows that everyone should be treated equally as and it does not matter were you live. Another thing that has really interested me is the fact that there is a heavy contrast of different colours creating these kind of gloomy images.
instead of taking her images with an ordinary camera she uses her iPhone and edits them using a smartphone which really confuses and fascinates me because it just shows that you do not have to pay a lot of money to be able to create some images that are this good. You can just find some things at home and make some use out of it.
The reason that she has double exposed the two cites together is to show how similar and different these two places can be. As they both have lots of different architecture and different patterns however they both are buildings even if they do not look the same.
The artist herself said, “’New York + London’ explores place, memory, and identity through architecture and nostalgia. My hope is that in the noise and silence, everyone will find something that feels like home.” Another reason why I believe that she has double exposed these two cities together is to show her love for both of these places as it makes her feel more at home.
Her work has really inspired me and I can not wait to take images that have been inspired by her as I know I will have a lot of fun trying to take these images.

Photo-shoot Plan

I am really pleased with how my photo-shoot has turned out as I have managed to take a lot of really amazing images that are inspired by Daniella Zalcman. What I have done to capture these images is that I have just walked around taking images of all the different buildings. I have also taken these images using my phone and positioning it so you are able to see the whole entire image and not just one part. I am also really happy because the weather was really good and if it was bad it would have ruined my images. For some of my images I should have maybe positioned my images so that the different buildings are in the middle of the image. As you can see in some of my images I have taken of lots of fascinating trees for example in one of my images you can see a tree with lots of different colours making my image look more interesting.
Developments-Double Exposure

Annotations
My developments have turned out better than I have expected as I have managed to make a lot of images. Firstly what I have done to make these images is that I have double exposed them meaning that I have gotten two separate images and I have over layered and I have done this using the media photoshop this also fits in with her work because she also takes similar pictures and edits them. I have also been inspired by that photographer Daniella Zalcman as I really like her work as it is very chaotic and there is a lot of things happening and in my work these images have a heavy contrast of colours. Her work also has a deeper meaning that everyone should be treated equally. To improve my work for next time I will make the lighting a bit better so it fits in well with her work. For next time I will try to create an image with more meaning just like Daniella Zalcman.
Further developments

Annotations
I am really happy with how my developments have turned out because I have managed to create a lot of amazing images. Firstly, what I have done is overlayed to images together than I have then looked up the colour and changes them to either crisp warm, drop blues or fall colours and they have created these amazing images and I have done this using the media photoshop. The artist fits in with these developments as her work is really colourful and these images also look similar to her images. In my work I have also managed to create lots of different patterns and lines making the image pop out at you. Also in my work I have also created a lot of abstrct images just like hers. I really like all the images because they are really fascinating and you are able to see the different parts of London. To improve my work for next time I will decrease the brightness a tiny bit more as it is to bright.
Exploring composition

Annotations
I am really happy with how my developments have turned out as I have managed to create a lot of interesting images. To create these images I have firstly got three of my developments and for one of them I have extended the image. I have then copied the two other images and copied it onto the image that I have extended. The reason why I have done this is so I can explore all the different compositions that I can create using these images, and also my artist fits in well with these images because she also explores composition so she can fit the whole image in one photo and not just parts of it. To improve my work I will make sure that I have not stretched out the image to much.

I am really pleased with how my redraft photo-shoot has turned out. This is because I was able to take lots of interesting and amazing images as I went to Westminster and walked around to all the different architecture and I was took lots of images that have been inspired by the artist Daniella Zalcman. I have also used my phone to take these images and I have positioned all phone in lots of different angles and I made sure that you are able to see the whole entire image. Also for my developments I have planned to get two images and double expose them together so that the images overlap. Unfortunately some of my images were not that good because all the different lights have ruined my images as in Daniella Zalcman's work she did not have all these different lights and colours in her work. To improve my work for next time I will make sure that when I take my images I will try to stay away from lights.

To improve my work for next time I will try to stay away from Christmas lights as Daniella Zalcman work does not have lights as it ruins the image.

I am really impressed with how my further developments have turned out because I have to create some really nice and interesting images. Firstly what I have done is gotten two images and double exposed them together, meaning that I have overlayered them. I have then decreased the hue and then increased the saturation. I have also done this using the media photoshop. The reason why I have decided to do this technique is because it makes my images look more warm just like Daniella Zalcman's work. In my images I really like the fact that there is a lot of different colours and lots of different shapes. To improve my work for next time I will make sure that the images I do not have really bright lights.

I am really happy with how my developments have turned out. To create this image I have gotten three images, I have then increased the one of the images. I have then copied the other two images onto the image that I have extended and placed them in the right position. I have done this using the media photoshop. My artist also fits in with my work because she also explores composition in her work so that she can capture the whole entire image. I really like this image because it looks more interesting and fascinating then usual. To improve my work for next time I will try to stay away from Christmas lights as Daniella Zalcman's work does not have any lights in it.
Further Developments

Annotations
I am really impressed with how my further developments have turned out as my images look really interesting. Firstly what I have done is taken my first set of developments and I have printed them out, then I cut them up and positioned them in lots of different angle and I really like the fact that in these developments there is a lot of colour just like in Daniella Zalcman's images. Another reason why I have done this is so that I can explore the composition of my images to make them look more interesting. My images also look really unusual as you usually do not see images like these and I have tried to make my images look more like Daniella.
Further Further Developments

I am really impressed with how my third set of further developments have turned out as I have managed to create a lot of interesting images. Firstly what I have done is I have gotten my previous images and double exposed them together, meaning overlaying two image, and it has then created these images with lots of different compositions. I have also used the media photoshop to create these images. One reason why I have decided to edit to collage these images is because I ould like to show you all the different patterns and lines that I have managed to create. I have also done this as I believe that all the different architecture is really nice and I would like to showcase them all together.
Gif

Annotations
I have created some GIF images to make my work look more interesting to look at and I am really impressed with how they have turned out. To create this GIF I have went to the hue setting on photoshop and started for -60 and continued to go up till +60. After doing this I have went on a gif maker website and I have uploaded these images making them change from one image to another creating this lovely GIF. I have then slowed down the pace so you are able to see all the different colours. I am really impressed with all the different colours and shapes that I have managed to create.
