MAN RAY:

man ray moodboard.jpg

“An original is a creation motivated by desire. Any reproduction of an originals motivated be necessity. It is marvelous that we are the only species that creates gratuitous forms. To create is divine, to reproduce is human.”  -Man Ray was an American visual photographer that was born on the 27th of august 1890 in Philadelphia ,US and died on the 18th of November in 1976. His images are mainly portrait however uses different techniques to make it pencil drawn . Furthermore he uses double exposure for example 'Les Larmes' demonstrated his interest in cinematic narrative. The woman's eyes and mascara-coated eyelashes are facing upwards evoking the viewers to wonder why she is looking in that way and what is the source of her distress. Overall I would say that Man Ray is a very abstract artist and relies on his imagination to create such captivating images. Man Ray had later went on to develop a career as  mainly a fashion photographer; he had become really successful and worked with a fashion photographer in Paris. Furthermore he would assemble different objects to create which really interested others.

His experiments with photography consisted of rediscovering ''cameraless'' pictures which he called ''rayographs''. During his fashion and portrait photography career and made a virtual photographic record of celebrities in Parisian culture during the 1920's and 1930's. He significantly contributed to the Dada and Surrealist movements; this was artistic, intellectual and literary movements of the early century. Dada was anti-aesthetic , anti-rational and anti-idealistic. As a whole Man ray , also known as Emmanuel-Radnitszky, has a given me a broader perspective of photography from his concept and his techniques he experiments with to create such enthralling images. His innovative work can be found on display in museums around the world as he is remembered for his artistic wit and originality. His friend Marcel Duchamp , once said," It was his achievement to treat the camera as he treated the paint brush, as a mere instrument at the service of the mind."

Man Ray mainly uses black and white on his images to represent the 80's and 90's however it also gives it an elegant and vintage theme. Every single one of his images is really different which is really interesting and helpful as viewers would not rather a set of images that are competitive. Man Ray has really inspired me to do a photoshoot in the style of his work because when I begin editing I can experiment with a range of techniques to make it vivid and captivating; at a portrait angle and do some zoomed in to make it different. This photographer is really similiar to Tatiana Parcero, as she expressed her heritage and background through black and white images of her body such as her face , her hands etc. This links to Man Ray because he also uses his hands and body which makes them have a similiar concept. “I like contradictions. We have never attained the infinite variety and contradictions that exist in nature. Tomorrow I shall contradict myself. That is the one way I have of asserting my liberty, the real liberty one does not find as a member of society.”

PHOTOSHOOT PLAN:

CONTACT SHEET:

man ray contact sheet 2.jpg
man ray contact sheet 3.jpg

I attempted my first Man Ray photoshoot with images of my hand draped in white mesh. I experimented with a range of camera angles to ensure all of the images were different and unique and also to link with my artists's work. Some of the images were captured with only the white mesh , so i could double expose them when editing.

I really like the images I captured of my hands. because I think it inks really well with identity and one of my previous artists of Tatiana Parcero. I used black wallpaper to really contrast with my subject image. When I begin editing I will use a range of techniques such as image blending , mirroring to really experiment with many sets of developments to show how my images could be enhanced. I decided to do different hand gestures to convey different emotions eg the scrunched had represent anger in contrast to the flat hand represening relaxtion. I would like my viewers to identify what I was symbolising and this would be from analysing the intricate details of my photoshoot. I really enjoyed doing this photoshoot because I was inspired by how Man Ray used colour , tone and pattern to create such captivating images. In addition to this the artists has 50's/60's inspired images therefore I will ensure I also black and white throughout my whole editing process as my base colour. However next time i could improve by taking images of different object , for my redraft i will ensure i capture more ambiguous images such as my face being covered with cloth or long exposure of my hands to experiment with different techniques. I also used portrait and landscape so my images could be viewed at a different angle.

BLACK AND WHITE DEVELOPMENTS

This is my first set of my black and white developments which I edited on photoshop. I adjusted the curve by decreasing it and the contrast by increasing it to create this sinister theme to my images. This first set of developments also reminds me of a crime scene similiar to Mari Mahr's work from the hands linking to an investigation. I would like my next technique to focus on image blending ; this technique really adds a unique patterns to the images and makes them look very captivating. What I really like about it is how similiar these are to Man Rays work and how he explores colour, tone and patterns. Next time I think to improve my photoshoot I could use low key lighting (black background to really enhance my images more)

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:IMAGE BLENDING:

This is my next set of image blending developments that I also used photoshop to edit. I began by drawing the image with quick select pressing CTRL-C, CTRL-V and CTRL-T to copy and paste and lastly changing the filter to hard light to create these very harshly contrasts edited images in the style of Man Ray. What i have noticed about these images is that they have a pattern

PROCESS LOGS:

process log 1.jpg

Firstly , I make all the images  black and white making sure I increase the contrast and decrease the curve

Next, I press CTRL-C , CTRL-V and CTRL-T to copy and paste the same image on  top of each other

Lastly , i change the filter to 'hard light' to create these harshly contrasted images in the style of Man Ray

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS: MIRRORING

This is my next set of developments which consists of  mirroring the previous black and white edits. Firstly I extended the canvas, then I began drawing around my original image and pressed the keys: CTRL-C, CTRL-V and CTRL-T to copy and paste  and flip the image and lastly positioned it in the same way to create these intricate images in the style of Man Ray. I decided that rotating the image would look more captivating because it brings out a more unique and enthralling side to the image. In a addition to this I would like to refine and experiment with these images with other techniques such as double exposure, image blending and mainly using the inverted graph. In addition to this I really admire how it plays with the viewers mind as they will not immediately realize that I have used white cloth therefore everyone will have a different perspective on this.
I also like how it is so contrasted and vivid which is what i was going for in terms of editing in the style of Man Rays images. The artists really focuses on using his body and face to express different emotions , and all his images are black and white which really outlines the 50's and 60's culture. Lastly i wiuld really like to do other photoshoots to refine this work and uses symbolic things such as my hand and face which represent me as a person.

PROCESS LOG:

Lastly i draw my original image with the quick select tool and press CTRL- C, CTRL-V AND CTRL-T to copy and paste and to also flip it creating these mirrored images

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS: INVERTED GRAPH

These are my inverted graph developments which I used photoshop to edit. I mainly used the graph (making sure the image is already black and white). I dragged it upwards making it a straight line and therefore all white. Lastly I dragged it downwards to create these x ray looking images in which I experimented with my previous black and white edits. What I really admire about these images is that I zoomed in and especially with this last image it shows the actual details of the models hand ( as a normal x ray would portray). What makes it more captivating is that the images are heavily contrasted and bring out the visual elements of the image. Man Ray really experiments with double exposure however this set of developments looks far from my original which allows them to have various perspectives. The theme of these images is ambiguity as they are captured with black and white instead of having colour which would represent a more colourful and joyous theme. The texture is quite grainy aswell which also kind of makes it seem ghostly. Lastly it has quite a chaotic pattern which emphasises the true representation of the image.

PROCESS LOG:

process log 1.jpg

Firstly, I make the images black and white making sure I increase the contrast and decrease the curve

Next, I make sure the line on the curve is straight  making my image completely  white

process log 2.jpg
process log 3.jpg

Lastly I drag the curve down creating this x-ray looking image.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS : MIRRORING 2

I further developed the previous set of developments by mirroring them. Firstly , I used the curve to create this x ray theme then I extended the canvas and drew the image with the quick select tool pressing CTRL-C , CTRL-V and CTRL -T to copy , paste and drag the image on the opposite side and flipped it. This is really unique and different to the other images as it sets a dark tone and an ominous atmosphere. Furthermore I like how I adjusted the usual editing technique of Man Ray and created images that were different to the his usual double exposure method on his images. I tried to further highlight identity

This is so far my favourite image from this set of developments as it almost created an image of a butterfly which juxtaposes with theme of Man Rays work therefore i like how i added a captivating twist on the images

PROCESS LOG:

Firstly , I extend the canvas making sure it is equal length.

Lastly i select the original image using CTRL-C, CTRL- V AND CTRL-T to flip it .

MAN RAY REDRAFT CONTACT SHEET:

yasmin man ray R contact sheet 1.jpg
yasmin ray contact sheet 2.jpg

This is my redraft contact sheet in which i focused on a different and more visual element of  his work. I had my model wear a black abaya to

emphasise the negative space and. Furthermore i used low key lighting again to explore negative space and therefore making the subject really vivid and encapsulating for the naked eye to view. In addition to this i had the model peform several hand gestures (some in front of her face , some without) so the images are not repetitive and boring . I would like to explore several tecgniques with the outcome of these images such as simple black and white , the inverted graph technique and mirroring and at the end i would like to display composition so viewers can see the consistency of my work and the captivating outcomes. Furthermore, some of the images have had too much light project onto the black backdrop and looking less dark therefore I would like to burn the background to ensure i complete the exploring negative space .

REDRAFT DEVELOPMENTS: BLACK AND WHITE, EXPLORING NEGATIVE SPACE)

This is my completed black and white set of developments that i used adobe photoshop to edit . Firstly, i make the image black and white , adjusting the contrast and curve to make sure the outcome is really vivid. Furthermore i burn the background on top of decreasing the curve as i am exploring negative space.

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:MIRRORING

FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS: MIRRORING

These are my mirroring developments in which I used adobe photoshop to edit. Firstly, I made the image black and white making sure I adjusted the curve and the contrast to make it really vivid. Then I extended the canvas  and draw the original image with the quick select tool .Lastly I press CTRL-C, CTRL-V and CTRL-T to rotate it the opposite side.

This last development is my favourite as the  two hands almost create a pattern. I also made sure to explore negative space throughout my whole editing process this is to focus the viewers onto the subject of my image and so it could draw there attention more hence I used low key lighting.

I also like the developmentl directly onto of the one I previously said I liked. This is because I like how the hands covering the models face enhances the theme of ambiguity I was going fort throughout my final piece.

PROCESS LOG:

1.jpg

Firstly I begin making the image black and white making sure I increase the contrast and decrease the curve

Then I extend the canvas with the equal size and draw the original image with the quick select tool.

2.jpg
3.jpg

Then finally I copy and paste the image with CTRL -C, CTRL-V and CTRL-T ( rotating this image) creating this mirrored image in the style of Man Ray

REDRAFT FURTHER DEVELOPMENTS:INVERTED GRAPH

This is my next set of developments that consists of using the inverted graph technique to produce these striking images. Firstly I made the image black and white (making sure I adjust the contrast and graph to make it bold). Then, I select the graph curve and drag it upwards to make it a straight line and therefore making the image all white. Lastly I drag the the curve from the middle , straight down to create these x-ray themed developments. Although these are very simple they almost emblematic of ambiguity and emphasise the theme of ominous images ; due to this it leaves the viewers questioning the true purpose of the image. What I really admire about these developments is they are really similar to one of Man Rays famous piece called ' Les Larmes'. Although I have not incorporated tears into my photoshoot its similar in the way I structured my image and how I used the fascinating human body to develop something so unusual and strange.

PROCESS LOG - INVERTED GRAPH

Firstly I make the image black and white making sure I increase the contrast and decrease the curve

Next, I select the graph curve and drag it upwards to make it a straight line and therefore all white

2.jpg
3.jpg

Finally I drag the curve down creating this x -ray inspired image in the style of Man Ray

REDRAFT FURTHER  DEVELOPMENTS: MIRRORING

This is my final set of developments that consists of mirroring the previous images. Firstly, i extend the canvas to the equal length, then i draw my original image with the quick select tool to copy and paste CTRL-C, CTRL-V, and CTRL-T and lastly flipping the image to the other side. These developments really is similar to Man Rays as the explores patterns and the tone of is work. And although most of his work is black and white he is still able too incorporate captivating patterns and illusions in his work.

This is one o my favourite developments out of this technique along with some other. I think mirroring is a good technique as it almost portrays a mini composition of your work.

This also enhances the
theme of ambiguity as it does not portray the true colours making the viewers feel as if the image is unexplained or unknown.
