GCSE PHOTOGRAPHY - ROSIE REDMAN
CLINT FULKERSON

Clint Fulkerson is a photographer from Portland born in 1980 .He has a BFA in metals for mass art but he has mainly been an artist who has been specialized in 2D art since 2005.Fulkerson's work had a big impact by what he was inspired by the most which is nature and technology. He feels like human culture is separated by the natural world .When he was an early adult he studied and trained metalsmithing. He taught this for a number of years and still uses his skills occasionally to create complex structures. In the first photograph it comes across as a very beautiful intertwining geometrical shapes where Clint Fulkerson enhances on the outline of the photographs and made it look like cells. This is convenient due to me looking at cells and bacteria. It looks as if a spider has invaded the work. In the second photograph it looks as if a cell had an x-ray due to the way Fulkerson has portrayed his work. The shapes looks like a honeycomb since the pattern was dynamic and unusual. In image 1 it makes me think its in a galaxy due to the symmetrical lines and infinite patterns which look like they disappear into the distance. For the first picture I would name it galaxy since it looks like different shapes in the sky .Where as in the second picture I would name it the hive since it looks like honeycomb in a hive. If someone were to be involved in this photography they would feel little and compressed since there are many small shapes and very few spaces in the picture. They would feel isolated and in a loop hole of never ending bubbles.

Contact Sheet - RAW images

My intention of this photoshoot was to take photos in the style of Clint Fulkerson. The style I wanted to show off was the black and white images with the bubbly symmetrical effect. I took these images due to the perfect lighting and composition. The successful element of my work was the attention to detail which I think worked well since the soapy water and ink created a smoothing effect .Whereas , the unsuccessful elements of my work was the variety of my work . I feel like there is not a big variety to my work due to it being the same type of patterns each time. Next time when completing my photoshoot I am going to change up the plans and designs linking to my work.

Development series 1 - experimenting with double exposure and black and white imagery

In my work , I created a range of patterns and shapes and edited them in the style of Fulkerson. I increased the contrast to make a deep change of lighting .I also changed levels to create depth in one area and lightness in other areas. I feel like this was a key tool to use since it developed a heavy contrast. My work was created to show a galaxy type of theme and to show strange and unusual patterns to my work. A technique that was important to improve my edits from the start is convert them to black and white to make sure there is no other shades of colours involved. I chose this to technique since it worked well with my work and was most helpful. This fits in with my project since the artist's work is the work I am creating however in my own style. My work comes across as ambiguous and looks like voids which I strongly like about it. However in my redraft , I would want my work to be even more creative than it is right now.
Further Developments

In my developments I edited images in double exposure and mirroring. I did this to show my understanding of my work to a further level. The double exposure creates a paired effect which is cool since I am trying to prove my understanding of patterns and shapes in the style of Clint Fulkerson. I did these techniques because it looks way better and shows much more detail to my work . This was a successful element to my editing. It fits in with the idea of Clint Fulkerson since he created dynamic patterns and shapes as well. I like how I was able to make different patterns which turned out better than I thought. I can improve the work by making more shapes and designs to show variety to my work. Next I think i'd make my options more open so I can switch up my work more.
Contact Sheet Redraft

My intentions of this photoshoot was to capture images in the style of Clint Fulkerson. In my redraft photoshoot I changed it to make it different from the first photoshoot by not having a circle to cut off some of the work .However , I decided to develop my work in the style of Fulkerson's galaxy picture I had shown in my artist analysis. Successful elements of this photoshoot is that I captured the different looks .
It created an ambiguous vibe and geometrical pattern to my work. Unsuccessful elements to my work was how the work didn't have much patterns as I wanted. If I were to take this photos again I would've created more patterns to show a variety of photographs.
Development Redraft

Whiles doing my redraft edits of Clint Fulkerson, I edited them by changing the brightness and contrast , however this time I made sure I created a deeper contrast to experiment with the editing controls. I chose to change the gradient on all of my work to point out the clear hash lines of my work. Techniques and media I had decided to use was white and black so I can create work in the style of Fulkerson. I like the depth of my work and how it was formed and turned out in the end .It was turned into a gloomy atmosphere which was my favourite part of my developed work. I can improve my work by further developing my edits by double exposing them and mirroring them. Next time I would want to double expose them and create different and unique edits where my work would look more advanced.
Further development Redraft

In these development I have experimented with double exposure. I chose to experiment with double exposure since it creates a mirroring effect to my work. I have accomplished working with double exposure by exposing the same image twice and layered it on each other. By double exposing my work it created a loop of my image to create a chaotic look to my developments .I used this technique because it shows a clear understanding of edits in the style of Fulkerson's work. I also decided to make my edits mirrored since I thought it was interesting experimenting with different tools and showing my skills. Double exposure fits in with my work because Clint Fulkerson's work involves copying a pattern within the picture (loops and spirals).I like how the pictures blended in and fitted correctly into my work and complimented each other well . I could improve my work by making more interesting patterns instead of repeating the same technique. In my next set of developments I could make a series of my work in circles.
Further developments with circles

In my second set of further developments I decided to experiment with a petri dish type of mood. I selected a circle of my work and rotated it to make my work look different in the middle and a circle to create a puzzle type picture. I did this by selecting a circle of work and rotating it to change up the picture to make it look odd. I liked how these turned out since it made a nice edit and it looks pretty odd but cool.Next time I am going to cut out the middle of the picture and fill the circle with a different black and white edit.
