FEMININITY AND SURREALISM
What is surrealism?
Surrealism is a cultural movement that developed in Europe in the aftermath of World War I in which artists depicted unnerving, illogical scenes and developed techniques to allow the unconscious mind to express itself.
What is femininity?
The term femininity describes sets of attributes that contribute to how society believes young girls and women should act and behave when it comes to roles that are generally suited to females. It is socially constructed and although is not due to biological features, these factors may influence femininity.
Why have I chosen femininity/surrealism and what would I like to explore?
Living the confusing and hectic life of a young teenager, I would say is the very definition of finding out your identity and who you are as a person. Many people either regret or enjoyed their teenage years depending on their own personal experiences , saying that they were either the most difficult or the most amazing years of their life. Another part of finding your identity as a young girl teenager is embracing your femininity and 'owning' it.
I am planning on taking photographs with flowers, makeup and other materials that are associated with femininity. I will do this because I believe that it will accentuate the focus and coherency of the photographs that I am trying to produce. I have chosen to do the as I would like to portray different ways that people become comfortable in their own femininity and identity. Gender is also a social identity and understanding yourself and finding your feminine side to yourself and helps us understand ourselves in relation to others. I think that this links to identity in todays world as what is pictured as feminine is being changed by society constantly.
I am going to tory to project femininity in this project because I believe that being 'feminine' can be interpreted in various ways. It will be interesting to see how other photographers both male and female view femininity and how they project that into their work. I am excited to replicate and experiment with photography further in simple but effective ways by using photoshop and different camera settings. I think that overall this project will improve my editing skills and allow me to express how I view being feminine through my own photography.
